Is there any chance that PRS makes a model that is not attached to John's name? I think it would be great if they did that. I know if I was a touring or even a famous musician I may not want to play a signature guitar that is not my name.

For instance, Philip Sayce, I would want my own model or one that doesn't have John's name on it.

There is only one model that has transcended the original signature name, Les Paul. I think there are a few that are becoming if not have already experienced this. The DGT, the Ibanez Steve Vai JEM. The DGT more-so.

I believe I recall seeing JM say he hoped the Silver Sky would evolve beyond just being his signature model, so it wouldn't entirely surprise me for some differently spec'd models of Silver Sky to come out.

I've actually seen more pro musicians (even some fairly big names) playing Silvery Sky models, than most other types of signature models (other than Les Pauls, of course). I suppose there will always be some JM association in any model labeled "Silver Sky," even if his name isn't explicitly mentioned, it'll still have that headstock shape and at least some of the other peculiarities of that model, so taking his name off the guitar technically, I don't think would affect how many pros use them.

I would like to see some tweaks to the SS, mainly a flatter radius and some big @$$ frets - not because I think the current model doesn't work with what it has, it would just be a cool differentiation.

All due respect, this sounds like a you problem.

Now, I could see something similar like Kendrick Lamar not wanting to touch Drake’s signature whatever.

It seems that your issue is specifically with John Mayer.

If I had to bet, I’d say that most touring or famous guitarists don’t even care; As long as the guitar feels good in their hands and sounds good to their ears.

A good example is Tim Pierce, who plays a McCarty, a McCarty Singlecut PS, and a DGT very happily alongside his other guitars.

My son endorses Fender, but told me the Silver Sky is becoming very highly regarded among many other touring pros he’s friends with.

It’s getting a big reputation because it’s a really good guitar.

I’m sure there are others who will only play Leo’s signature Fender, or Orville’s signature Gibson, though…. 🥹

That was my thought on those signature lines, also.

Right?

I know there are folks who don’t want a guitar identified with someone else. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but unless you build your own, your name isn’t gonna be on the headstock.

So it’s kind of splitting hairs to be concerned about an endorser’s name being added.

Besides, the Silver Sky isn’t called the John Mayer Signature. It’s just a name.

@rickcard71,

if that drives you crazy and you can't revise your opinion, in extremis no other brand would satisfy you, because any guitar of them is another ones personal design.

In that case the best prescription is to call an independent luthier - one who is able to bring any given guitar idea - within technical and mechanical boundaries of feasibility - to reality. Short: order your own signature guitar, that is the extension of your body, mind, heart, and soul.
