Has anyone here changed out the stock pickups in their Silver Sky SE? And if so, what did you put in there?

At first I really thought I was going to keep the stock pups in the guitar but I played the guitar for like 5 hours through different amps (which is enough for me to delve in a good deal) and compared it to the other guitars. I found that I really enjoy praying the SSSE but I also found that maybe I don't enjoy the pickups as well as I initially thought so (Im not 100%) but I think, yes, I'm going to upgrade them. There's nothing wrong with them, just not my flavor.

There are things about the John Mayer pickups that I like and things I don't like and then things about them that make them sound good or worse with certain effects. When I compared them to my strat with the Cradle Rock Pickups, it blew the John Mayer pickups away.

The John Mayer S pickups seem to be wound so that they have an already set margin of compression, I wouldn't need a compressor pedal with these - as discovered today. They have a great balance, when sweeping across the 5 positions, the treble doesn't spike. Instead, the treble is pretty even throughout. These 2 things, I feel, is where the Mayer pickups shine.

I am thinking to upgrade to the Bare Knuckles Triptych set or the Fender ML Ultra Noiseless Michael Landau set. Or maybe the Seymour Duncan Five Two set that I have that's just collecting dust at the moment.

What are your thoughts on the John Mayer S pickups? And where I should go?

Only you know what you're looking for... What style of music will this guitar be used for, what sounds in your head are you chasing, etc... You obviously have a lot of experience buying and using different aftermarket pups, so I'd say you're your own expert. Not sure this is a question that anyone but you can answer.

I'm still on the fence, I can't really decide because on one hand, the Silver Sky SE pickups are not what I typically look for in a strat set. On the other hand, they are unique and full sounding. So now I'm thinking of just leaving them in again lol

Sometimes it’s good to live with them in the guitar for a while. Comparison with other guitars in your arsenal can sometimes help.

I didn’t change pickups in my SE 245 for sometime, until I decided I wanted a slightly different tone/response from them.

It’s your guitar, you make it how you want it.
