I heard the pickups are a different size than Fender's offerings. This would hinder modding if the "S" version of the JMS65 is a weak point. Can any SS owners confirm?
True. Hopefully Fender guards fit without having to drill. I'm sure many aftermarkets will join in with many color options.Good news it's a pickguard and can swap the whole thing if they're a differnet size.

You are correct. The following video shows the SS route cavity at 2:34. Not interested in modding the body to accommodate other PUP's. Hopefully the 635JMs will be keepers.Fender pickups have that sort of “v” shape at the bottom of the bobbin where the connections are soldered, and the pickup cavities in the body are routed accordingly. SS pickups are just oval shaped and the body is routed that way as well. If the SE SS is the same, you’d need to do some minor routing to accommodate the typical Fender shape.
Pickup screws through shielding tape? That's kind of cool. Never seen that before! You are correct. The following video shows the SS route cavity at 2:34. Not interested in modding the body to accommodate other PUP's. Hopefully the JMS65s will be keepers.
That opens up a lot of opportunities!Looks like the PUPs in the SS SE are more Fender in size and the pickup cavity can now accommodate most single coils. Check out the video at 9:20. That is great news for us who like to mod our guitars
