Hi. I've just acquired a USA PRS Santana. How much can one tell about the guitar from it's serial number? I understand that the first two digits are the year but do PRS keep a record of anything else?

If the guitar is older than 2009 the year is only the first digit (8xxxx or 09xxxx to 14xxxx). As far as the details on the build, there is a code called a MODCAT in the bridge pup cavity. You can decipher the code here.

The bar code sticker in mine reads W/O 475975 Item RD123 dated 04/13/12

OK, In that case I don't have a MODCAT code sticker in my guitar. What does that imply? Did I buy a fake?

I just got an email from PRS. Apparently it was a custom build for a customer. Hence no MODCAT. Phew, that's a relief!

No, I'm not a troll. I got given an unverifiable shaggy dog story when I was buying the guitar (apparently it came from an estate) and when I got home I looked at all the 'case candy', none of it was filled out and you know.... the seeds of doubt get sown.
