.. More like undead.
I joined one of those "reggae on the beach" kinda cover bands a couple of months ago as a bassist just to make a few bucks, ended up hating it, and subsequently quitting it. I thought that having at least one live gig a week, every week, would be fulfilling, but there were just too many heavy vibes and Marley songs to keep me interested. I decided I really needed to find something fun to do, something to jump-start a better attitude towards making music for the hell of it rather than always chasing money. It can get tiring over twenty plus years.
I saw an old buddy's band on FB talking about getting together for a reunion show and they were down one guitarist, so flippantly I hollered at them to see if they needed a little help, and it turned out they did.
They promised me zero money, no, actually they warned me it would probably cost me money, but yet the gig was too enticing to pass up, so I found myself joining a female-fronted surf-punk band called the Venom Lords.
I know what you're thinkin' "What? Sergio don't rock out no more! He's a hip-hop and funk dude!"
Yeah, that's true, but I know a good time when I see one, and here's what I couldn't help but to say yes to: I get to play lead guitar in a band who plays songs entirely about zombies, while dressed as a zombie, to an audience made up of people dressed up as zombies!
Sh!t! How could I say no?
They have a show on the 11th at some Zombiefest in Milwaukee, we've been rehearsing for the past few weeks, and things are going pretty well. I get to pretend to be all East Bay Ray (Dead Kennedy's) and I'm enjoying playing loud rock guitar again, even if it is just for a couple of shows. The dynamic with the band being half female is refreshing as it isn't all macho posturing, and I enjoy an element of schtick in case nobody has noticed yet. Even though they aren't the best players, their songs are cool and I'm really enjoying myself for a change... It's crazy.
I'm torn between two options for my mandatory zombie character I need to come up with, but I think I'm leaning towards going as an undead Blues Dentist. I figure I could get a BMW cap, some tan shorts, an Acapulco shirt, find a way to rig a golf club to look like it has skewered me, some face paint, two of my PRS, and I'd be good to go.
Here are a couple of tunes they have and a video or two. The first one has a pretty long vignette to get through, but it was directed by the dude who's writing the new Texas Chainsaw movie who's apparently planning on writing some Venom Lords into it (we'll see about that!).
Anybody up in Wisco want to dress up as a zombie and see a rare opportunity of me being a "rocker" once again, hit me up.
