Well, I managed to do one of the two.

    1) I installed the PRS SE locking tuners successfully (but I felt like I was betraying John Mann).

    2) Stringing the low E, there wasn't enough room on the post for me to clamp down on the silk end and still bring it up to pitch. So, I clamped down on the flatwinding... with the round core. While bringing it up pitch -- snap-city. (I hope this saves someone from doing the same dumb thing)

So, I guess I'll need to look for a hex-core, pure nickel ground-wound if I want a jazzier feel (or put the stock tuners back in and have more string choices)

    Looks great.
I’m not familiar with those strings, having a hard time picturing the issue. Is the outside wound part not long enough to string through the tuner hole? Or is the wound string too big to fit through the hole? If it’s the latter, I’ve had to drill the hole on the tuner out slightly larger.

One would think that if the string is too big for the hole in the tuner, the nut would be an issue as well.

True. Often times it may sit in the nut, just not properly and would bind. Being a bigger string gauge guy, I’ve had to do nut filing on many of my guitars. I like 10-52 on most of my standard/drop D tuned guitars. I can’t remember if I had to drill out a tuner for a 52 or not because I have a few that have 56 or 60 on the low string as well.

Like I said, I’m having trouble picturing the actual issue here and was just spit balling ideas of issues I have run into.

I see. I haven’t used flats but have used round core strings. You can try pulling the string right through the tuner, then bend it a full 90 degree angle at the post before tightening the locking screw down. Another thing is to not crank the thumb screw down super tight. Finger tight, then a 1/4 turn more with a coin. Over tightening can sheer the string off. I have a Schaller set that will cut the string off if too tight, then snap! That’s all I got.

Thanks. But I was careful not to over tighten (all my SEs have Mann locking tuners & my S2s lock as well).
The core broke & it unwound at the post before I could get it to pitch. If I were to clamp down on the silk lead, there would be too many wraps on the post, so I treated it like every hex-core roundwound I’ve used for years without problems— draw it taut & clamp. That was wrong for me. YMMV.

Got mine today. Birthday present to myself. The only thing I wish it had was binding on the f hole so the 3ply was hidden. Still, absolutely love it. Does anyone know what kind of nut it comes with?

I knew that was Rob Harris even before they brought the image to focus, “Jazz club, nice!”

    Well done sir.

Dave’s somehow got a used 35th Anniversary SE before they got a new one. It sold immediately at a $400 discount. I am sad.

Around...staying in plenty of trouble ;)

Looks like Thursday will be NGD so I'll try to post some impressions next weekend. I don't have a core HB anymore; I do have a late 90s Nashville CS 355 and a '19 CU22 Special semi as reference points though.

Sneaky way for an old member to cross over the likes to posts ratio.

    Good to see you back.
