I'm thinking of getting either a SC58 (or one w/ Artist PKG) or a 408 Brazilian. I know these are two different animals, but would love to hear from those who has either or both. For one thing, I've never played a PRS with 408 pickups so have no idea as to their tone. It seems SC58 is a straight forward guitar whereas 408 has more bells and whistles.

Enigma - I chose my 408 Brazzy over a Stripped 58 during the GC 49th anniversary sales last year. They are indeed very different animals, and I wish I could have gotten both.

The 58 was probably the best straight-ahead rock-n-roll guitar for my ears that I have heard to-date. The 57/08s sounded amazing, and I think the two-piece bridge does alot, too, as I tried out a brand new SC245 they had just gotten in, and the Stripper sounded better to my ears.

I ultimately chose the 408 Brazzy because the neck felt so damn good, and it was a sick deal (I had never thought I would be in a position to own a PRS with a solid BRW neck). Of course it sounds amazing as well. The 408s, if you have never tried them, are stellar - lots of different tones, and not a bad one in the lot. You will find alot of love for them out here, deservedly so. Playing with all of the different combinations and the tone/volume knobs never gets old (although it ain't no Alembic)...

I must say that I do favor brighter guitars, and as 408s go, I do narrowly prefer my Siggy and Paul's Guitar over the 408 Brazzy because of the low-mid emphasis. I end up running the neck in single-coil almost exclusively on the Brazzy because the neck full humbucker with gain can get a little wooly on my Boogie.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the description! The one that I'm considering apparently has Braz board with a Maple neck and Quilt top - I think this was a special "store" order.

As a guy who's owned both, they're different creatures and both unbelievably great.

Sorry Enigma that I misunderstood...my 408 Brazzy comments were based upon mine with a fully Brazzy neck, not maple w BRW fretboard. Being a lover of maple-necked CEs, I can say that that guitar would be right up my alley.

You just cannot go wrong with any variant of 408s, and Les' comment above is spot on, and considerably shorter than mine :)

A number of people here have called the BRW neck 408 the deal of the century. Couldn't go wrong with either. I think today I would lean towards the SC-58.

I have a Brazilian 408. While mine is certainly attractive, I have seen many better looking ones. Having said that, I wholeheartedly agree that these offer the most "bang for the buck" that PRS has ever offered. If you live near Cincinnati, you're welcome to try mine.

While we're on that subject, how many Braz 408s were built? I'm thinking there couldn't be all that many...a few hundred maybe?
