A few months I go bought a Custom 24 Artist Pack with a satin maple neck and ebony fretboard. This guitar plays like a dream, beyond my expectations. Had you asked me up front whether this was a neck I would consider, I wouldn't have been at all sure whereas it has been a revelation.

My question is whether this combination is unusual as I am not seeing it around very much in current UK stock?

With the CITES issue over all rosewoods, ebony is an increasingly popular choice for fretboards.

Maple is a "typical" neck wood for CU24s, so nothing really changed there.

Should provide a nice snappy tone/response, similar to all maple necks.

I think you will find it to be a more and more common combo, at least until the Dalbergia spp. SNAFU is cleaned up within CITES.

A lot of the maple necks I see are painted. I'm not really a fan of that look, but each to his/her own. Having said that, I LOVE that satin in maple neck finish. I have a WL Cu24 and an AP Santana with that neck/fretboard combo. Awesome! I also have a WL509 on order with that maple neck, and a maple board.

I’ve got a Custom 24 with maple neck and ebony board (and special lil anniversary birdies). I love it. I think it’s a pretty common combination but they get snapped up pretty quick and there might not be a whole lot on shelves due to fact that they are typically AP specs. I’m currently looking for ebony on hog which is proving to be a difficult combo to locate.

I’m always the odd man out, it seems.

I love the stained maple neck with gloss clear coat (and have one on a 594 and on my PRS maple Tonare PS) but for some reason I find the satin neck finish (at least the infused one they use on PRS maple necks) unpleasant to play.

In fact, I sold a beautiful WL McCarty mostly because I didn’t care for the feel of the neck, though on that model I also preferred the mahogany tone.

Ebony on mahogany is wonderful - well worth looking for.

My only experience of ebony on hog is a non-PRS acoustic, that has hog that is circa (100 years old), taken from the bridge of a WW1 battle ship. It’s a beautiful cherry colour!

As you were!! Move along please, nothing to see here! Sorry Mods:eek:

That's been the real revelation: the combination with a satin neck. It's a joy to play. So much so that the 594 with the really shiny neck isn't currently getting as much play - which wasn't totally the plan!
