I made sure to watch the excellent video that John Mann made, excuse the pun, so that made this very easy.

Man.... it’s weird seeing how shiny and gold looking these are at first! ;)

Well, I’m in a jam. This isn’t going well.

The tremolo is on, but maybe the guitar had 10s and I’m putting 9s? I don’t know what was on it but the backend of the tremolo is angled down all the way against the body. So I started backing out the tremolo claw screws, and it lifted a little. Not enough though.

Additionally, the middle four strings are sitting on the fretboard. The outer Es are fret buzz city.

At this point, I’m feeling like this was a huge mistake.

I used the Allen wrench to get the 6 screws taken down to the right height, just like the video.

I continued to back out the tremolo claw screws, until I achieved this

The middle four strings are flat against the fretboard

Oh, thanks, I see what you mean. The new bridge has them flat. I can’t believe he didn’t mention that in the video.

    Does a Santana 3 have a 10 inch radius?

In regards for having to adjust the claw screws. It's possible the blocks are different lengths, this would change the leverage the springs have.

You can also change the number of springs you are using, but it's going to change the feel of the trem. Unintuitively more springs will make it feel softer.

As for the radius, you shoulda just each string height until it feels right. If you try to match a 10" radius it'll be wrong as the strings should match the arc of a larger circle as the radius to the center of the fretboard radius is further away.

Thank you so much for all the excellent advice. I really appreciate it. I usually have my work done by a tech but the video made this look easier than it really is.

Well, I did my best. It’s a lot better. I can play it. But something is wonky and I don’t know what I’m doing, so it’s being dropped off tomorrow at my local PRS approved dealer/technician. Ray Mullen Music in Massachusetts.

The plating naturally kinda softens that edge. You can file it a bit if it bothers you, just be careful not to mess with the slot.

..... but even then adjusting the intonation will take care of any discrepancies.

Thank you. I really appreciate all of the input you guys have given me.

I’ll point that uncomfortable edge out to the tech tomorrow.

Luckily, I have Singlecuts that I can play while the Santana is sidelined.

Don’t doubt your decisions. I think you’re on a really good path with this guitar.

Nice!! It looks great and just needs a little setup... It looks like you did OK so far.
If you take your time with it, you will learn a lot in the process.
If you need the guitar fast, drop it to your local tech. I haven't taken my guitars to a tech for a setup in more than 20 years.
My last visit was a couple of years ago for a refret!

Thank you for the support, guys. I’ll be completely happy with it once it’s squared away. I love everything about the guitar.

It had 10s on it when I got it, but I just put 9s on there. I only played it a little, but I don’t like the 9s. I always use 9s, so maybe it’s the shorter scale? Anyway, I’m having 10s put back when it gets set up.
