So my last bid to join club Santana did not work out, unfortunately, but I'm not one to admit defeat easily, especially after experiencing the magic a beat up Santana III had to offer. After all, my wife recoiled at the sight of the poor thing and asked whether a few extra dollars might fetch a specimen that didn't look like it had served in the last world war, and I couldn't let her down. With that in mind, a very appealing, mint, 2023 retro model 10-top in Santana yellow popped up on my radar at a higher, though very reasonable price. I spoke with the kind folks at Danville Music and they hooked me up with this fine specimen for a steal:
There are definitely some differences from the Santana III I sent back on its way - the pickups feel slightly less hot (maybe just a height adjustment needed) and definitely more articulate. Rolling down the tone knob to about 5 on the retro yields the sweet tones I was getting on the III with the tone at about 7, so it actually seems to have a bit of a broader range. The neck doesn't feel quite as chunky, but still feels great in the hand! Looking forward to the next few weeks of getting to know it. And the wife was pleased with how pretty it is, which is of course the most important consideration.
