Sanding a Custom 24 fretboard?

The owner of a beautiful Custom 24 with a 10" fretboard has asked me to refret it with stainless steel frets. But he asked me to change the radius to 14" while I was doing the work. The guitar has not been played much but he is adamant that he would like these changes.
I'm very familiar with this procedure, however - would removing that much material risk sanding through the birds?
Frankly the 10" radius and slim neck feel amazing as is. Thanks!

I would guess it would be close there are some PRS videos showing the raw inlays you might me able to get an idea of the depth of them , could you remove the inlays and reset them ??

Yeah, they are thin. Just a couple millimeters. Remove one and look. They are set with a superglue.

I would almost definitively expect you'd go though them, at least in the very middle where you'd need to sand away the most

They are thin but there's been several posts on here and other places of it being done successfully. There was someone who even did a compound radius. Changing to stainless frets on a guitar that doesn't even need fret work is something I'll never understand. Are we keeping up with the specs of other guitars on the internet?

I don’t really get it either. However people buy brand new guitars and immediately change the pickups, the nut, even the trem block (a particular source of chuckles for me!), so I guess it falls into the same category as that. To them there is some kind of benefit, perceived or real, and it’s their money so… At the end of the day it’s just a guitar.

I think things like stainless steel frets and roasted woods (both of which are really excellent) become fads to some degree. People want them "just because"!
