I saw this today and it reminded me of something that happened several months ago, and I wanted to share it with you.

Like many of you, I've had a cell phone for a long time. It started years ago when I was married and I got them for my wife and I because she was always having car trouble. (That woman could destroy a cannonball, but that's another subject for another time.) Then when I developed my health problems, some of my doctors suggested that we have cell phones in case an emergency ever came up while we were away from home.

Time passed, and last December the carrier I was using was going out of business. I got a letter saying I couldn't keep the same old phone I'd had for so long and had to get a new one, so one day I went to the store. (This was right after a neighbor I had at the time decided to get a new phone and asked me for advice. I posted about it here on the board because I didn't know one make or model from another.)

Anyway, I went to the store, met a young sales lady (or whatever they call them now) and she started in with her pitch. On and on she went about storage and how much video I could shoot and save, how advanced the camera was, how I could share photos with my friends and family on Jupiter, how great the phone was for texting, how great it was for gaming and that I could be the Supreme Champion of the Apocalyptic Snowboarding Zombie Hunters, blah, blah, blah... And the apps! App this and app that until I thought my head would explode!

When she finally slowed down and asked me if I had any questions, I said 'Yes I do; How is the reception?' That stopped her dead in her tracks. 'What do you mean by reception?' she said. I said 'The phone itself. How is the sound? Is it loud and clear at my end? Is it easy for the people on the other end of the call to hear and understand me?'

After she recovered some, she came up with an answer, but it was easy to see that she was faking it. I just looked at her. Finally she said 'Sir, you're the first person that's ever asked me that question.' I said I could see that. Nobody had ever asked this woman about the performance of a phone as a simple telephone!

I ended up choosing a phone, and I guess I made a good choice. It works when I need it to, which is all I ever wanted or needed. Beyond that, I don't ever think about it.

I am guilty of using my phone for no real reason at all. I've been making an effort to stay off of it. Although having it has been ultra convenient in many ways.

I'm telepathic, so I don't actually need a phone.

Then I realized that most other people are not telepathic, so they need a phone to know what I'm thinking. So I got one as a favor to other people.

I even pretend not to be telepathic so other people don't feel uncomfortable around me.

I'm such a wonderful person.

I see videos like this, read the comments at the bottom, and wonder how there could be business leaders out there who treat the net like a passing fad.

Remember when people couldn't think of a name, or a insignificant fact in the middle of a conversation and that meant it was your turn to talk? Now I have to sit there and wait for them to google Pat Harrington Jr. on their phone. Your interesting tidbits of information are only clever if you can rattle them off from memory, IMDB is cheating, and you're ruining my social experience.

Anybody who has to google Schroeder is not worth talking to.
