Are the S2 tuners Phase II's?!? I have heard they are and also they aren't.

I want to put the faux bone (DGT-like) buttons on my S2's - I think I need to get the Phase II version from the PRS store.

Anybody change their S2 tuner buttons yet?

FYI - Sean from PRS just told me that the buttons in the PRS store will NOT fit the S2 tuners.

I'll just get the direct replacements from Stew-Mac I guess...don't know what the difference is but supposedly people have used those and they are direct fit.

It is worth noting that in conversation with PRS, I was told that I would gain nothing by trying to upgrade to the next or top level PRS tuners. Mine on the S2 SC have been reliable during stringing and for holding tune. I, myself, would like to have ebony buttons.

The S2 tuners are the same basic design as the original phase II's I believe, but i believe they're imported, so they probably have a metric screw. Or something like that. Kind of like the S2/SE trem vs the USA trem. Awesome tuners though!

Not wanting to change the tuners...I want to change the tuner buttons. The bone-look ones like on my DGT's are great looking IMO and that's what I'm wanting to put on.

The S2 tuners are fantastic - there's zero reason to change them.

I put tortoise-shell buttons on my Alex Lifeson SE acoustic that matches the tortoise binding and heel cap...they look fantastic, and they were less than $10!

Let me know if you find out anything! I was looking into ebony buttons for mine as well.

For the sake of clarity, PRS tuners have always been imported. The S2 Phase II keys are probably from a different source and are a little different from the original Phase II. My guess would be that the previous versions used imperial measurements and the S2 use metric.

i went with Stew Mac on my SE SC and I think they will fit the S2 buttons. Metric sizing.

I replaced my s2 tuner buttons with schaller buttons direct from their website. They are working great for me.

Excellent! This is next on my list as well for my blue S2SC. Faux Bone or Ivoroid. Would love to see pics of the final result!

Anyone know a great source for good bone or ivory tone/volume knobs? I'd prefer good (heavy) quality. The PRS pots are great, I just want to match the tuner knobs.

Big C - Crazy Parts has 'em, but they are European and their prices are not in U.S. dollars - I have no idea how easy they are to work with for ordering.

Thanks! I ran across their products last week while researching. I'm surprised there are not more out there.. seems like a real basic and vintage thing to carry (Ivory knobs). Maybe I'll contact them and find out.

My new strap is coming from Scotland and some other accessories from Israel so why not, lol!

Edit: You have 8 PRS Cores! :D What do you think of them compared to the S2's? I just purchased an S2SC (and LOVE it). It took ordering 2 Tremonti SE's, and a S2 Vela, to get there, but I love the S2 Singlecut.

Edit2: Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen these custom knobs. In the end, Ivory tuner heads, 4 knobs (Ivory btm, Rosewood w/ white bird top), and an ivory 3-way toggle, is about $100 USD with shipping.

this is my s2 single cut with cream mini scholar buttons

This is the full shot.

Nice! I liked the mini's on this.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. I'll check out Stew Mac as well. Thinking the pots may have to come from Deutschland though. I can't find ivory or bone tone pots anywhere.

Big C -

It's actually 7 now - I sold one off a few days ago to a buddy that was after one of them for awhile...I'll go fix my signature!

The S2's are great, really great guitars. That being said, my particular Cores are better. Not so much in feel, but obviously they tend to look better visually (although I have done a pretty good job of picking out S2's with good wood!). I also find the pickups in my Cores (mostly either DGT pups or 57/08 pups) to be better than the #7's I have in my S2's. The main attribute that I have found in the Core pups compared to the S2's is the way I can roll off the guitar's volume to clean up the Lead channel on an amp...they just seem to be able to do that a lot better than the #7's...maybe it's just my imagination or some kind of placebo because with the #7's not being as "hot", you'd think they'd do that - maybe it's more of a transparency thing more than anything else...or possibly the other electronics inside besides the pups aren't as high of a quality?!? I don't know. I'll eventually get around to changing out some stuff - at least in my S2 Singlecut.

Those Schaller buttons above look great...I'm thinking I may go with the regular size instead of the "mini" version when I pull the trigger...hmmmm!

Great review thanks! I've yet to try out any of the core pickups. We moved to North Dakota's oil boom a couple years ago and having spent my life in the house of a Colonel and myself being a Captain, this is a first for being this isolated, lol. (Beautiful country though... Dances With Wolves!). It's not just how they clean up for me, it's also how... breathy in connection with strumming they are. I strum quite a bit and hard, which is easy on an electric with overdrive or power chords, but to get a clean airy sound which is good enough to pull off my acoustic parts is tricky. The P22 in this regard is looking real good. I almost purchased a Godin xtsa for it's Baggs piezo, that combined with it's on-board EQ is incredibly versatile.

The guys at Crazy Parts got back with me and they do carry the Ivory tone pots in both "Elephant" and "Grained Ivory". The grained matches the Schaller tuner tops, I think. Thanks for the tip!
