S2 Studio - any interest?

I think I've read that the Core Studio model was discontinued because sales were fairly flat. But like a lot of PRS enthusiasts, I've always wanted one, maybe not as my only PRS model, but certainly to add to the herd. Cost though for me at least, has been a deterrent.

But a S2 model, maybe with stoptail (make it adjustable), a HFS bridge humbucker, and then 2 of the single coils in the middle/neck would be awesome. Pattern regular like the rest of the lineup would be fine with me, mahogany neck and body, maple cap maybe. I would buy one for sure. I generally prefer the tone of a split humbucker in the neck, or single coil, with a powerful bridge humbucker, so this would be right up my alley.

Thoughts? Anyone else go for this? Any reasons why PRS shouldn't/won't do this? I'd be a willing guinea pig if they want me to be a tester:biggrin:

Also, I'm aware that the Studio doesn't have "true" single coil pickups, and that they're the Narrowfield design, but I imagine they're chimier than a regular humbucker. Correct me if I'm wrong though. Not sure if PRS would use those in a S2 model or not, but it would be cool. I think personally, I'd like the bridge humbucker to be exposed black coils for a more uniform look to go with the Narrowfields.

I've owned a regular Studio, SAS-Studio, and now only have 2 S2s. In both, I found the Narrowfields a bit muddy and not as chimey as I'd like, but liked them a little more in the Swamp Ash. That said, I might be interested in an S2 with NFs, especially if they came in an Ash or Alder solid body.

Sounds like you need to take a router to that S2 Standard 22. :top:

These Standards make a perfect platform for HSS or SSS or even HSH. Or P-90's. Or just about anything. Pickguards are great.

Hmm, not a bad idea! I'd have to get another one though, you know, keep one stock, mod the other one kinda thing. ;) I wonder how hard modifying the pickguard would be.

There are several places that will custom cut a new guard for you. Doesn't cost much; less than $50. If you're fairly handy, you could cut your own.

I'd be surprised if PRS doesn't at least do a P-90 version of the Standards sometime in the next couple of years.

Yeah you would need a new guard, since their is a humbucker hole in the neck with the 22. A new one could be ordered, like you said. I wouldn't be surprised either to see a P-90 of some sort. P-90's in the neck/middle and a humbucker in the bridge could be cool too.

I have always wanted an H-S-S PRS guitar. The Studio was on my radar and I came very close to buying one a couple years ago. I got an NF3 instead, and I love that guitar! The NFs are incredible sounding and it offers some killer flexibility.

If I found a good deal on a used Studio, I'd be interested. But if they came out with a true H-S-S model S2, I'd definitely have to check that out.

That's exactly what I was thinking would be a good solution for IRG.

I like this idea too. I like the traditional body shape a little more, but the Vela might be cool for a little diversity. I like the idea of that neck pickup too. The middle pickup is less important to me, but would still be cool to have. I've heard good things about this new bridge too, very Tele like, but something about the PRS adjustable wrap around bridge I like.

The middle pickup is less important to me...
Well wait a minute, isn't that the point? Well maybe not the whole point, but at least one of the points? Otherwise you could stick with the Vela or something.

Yes and no. Is that helpful? :) I think it would be cool to have the middle pickup. I play a strat too, and I really only use 2 positions on it, neck, and middle. Bridge is too bright/brittle, and 2/4 are ok, but a little too honky for me. Love the neck tone though, nothing quite like it. Would love to find that the Vela is close to that, or my S2 Studio idea.

Sounds like you need a better set of pickups in that Strat!

(Or sell it and mod a PRS S2 Standard 22 to HSS because I really want to see someone do that.)

You really should go try a Vela...the neck pickup sounds phenomenal, and even in full-bucker mode I think the Starla bridge pickup retains a bit of single-coileyness. No honk so to speak due to the pickup configuration. She may be your next fling...
