Hi, Shawn,

Recently purchased a new S2 SC guitar on Reverb from a reputable online retailer. The guitar, according to the retailer, had a faulty 3-way toggle, which was replaced prior to shipment to me. The retailer supposedly performed an inspection prior to shipment, but someone slipped up and the guitar was shipped, still with an electronics issue.

The guitar's middle and bridge position 3-way-toggle produces no sound. The neck position works correctly.

Could you help diagnose the issue? Possibly an improper wiring/solder connection?

The retailer offered to reimburse me for the cost of the repair with an emailed copy of the repair receipt if the work is performed locally.

Am bringing the guitar to a qualified tech this afternoon who can help diagnose the issue correctly and repair the guitar.

As long as the switch still clicks into all three positions, i can only assume it's a solder issue. However, if the switch takes a big whack during shipping, it can bust the switch and it will need to be replaced.

The switch does switch between 3 positions, and was previously replaced at the retailer prior to its recent shipment. The switch might have been misdiagnosed as the problem, when it might be a solder issue.

My local guitar tech took the backplate off the switch and tested for continuity...the red to ground wire (neck) pickup read 8.03K. The grayish-green wire to ground (bridge), 0. The tech will pull the pick guard off and check the PRS S2 diagrams first and see if things "look" OK, then will check continuity in various connections.

The tech said that if the wiring is suspect, he'd correct it, put it back together, clean it up and contact me by Friday. Otherwise, he'd equally notify me if the bridge pickup itself might be the problem.

My gut feeling (and hope) is that it's just a loose or poor solder connection, or a "discontinuous" (read: internally broken) wire, a small-ish repair. Either way, the retailer is on board with the reimbursement for the repair. Just hoping it's not the pickup, which would mean extra time, money, and effort.

Update / Solution:

Good news. The retailer had correctly wired the replacement 3-way toggle, but had either trimmed the wire too short, or skimped on wiring altogether.

My local tech had discovered that the retailer's tech had pulled the wire through the guitar cavity and caused a grounding short at one of the pots. Either that, or when the retailer tech replaced the wire, the wire was not lengthy enough to provide a safe connection to the pots. It's entirely possible that the retailer tech only trimmed the existing wire, pulling on it to connect the selector switch, but this remains an unknown because the retailer's tech did not disclose the details of his work.

My local tech gutted the selector switch wiring and re-wired the selector switch with PRS-specific 22-gauge wire. The guitar is ready to be picked up at his shop this evening. $50 for the repair out the door.

Good to hear it was something minor.

Correction:

According to the local guitar tech’s repair ticket, the retailer’s tech’s 3-way toggle wiring was faulty.

TBH, I’m not sure of what to make of this, except we’ll see if the retailer will cooperate by reimbursing for the comparatively minor wiring replacement/repair.

The retailer could protest, yet they’ve already agreed that they’d stand behind their customer service and reimburse for the repair cost. Am just thankful the issue was not a faulty bridge pickup.

EDIT: Retailer was contacted Friday evening and has stated that the reimbursement would occur Monday. (Presumably when their bookkeeper is back to work)

Glad they're making it right for ya.

Thanks. The retailer said to expect the reimbursement in my inbox today. (Ha! As I was writing, the PayPal text message displayed regards the reimbursement.) Remind me next time when I'm reclining in my chair with nothing else doing not to order anything silly expensive...;)o_O
