Hi guys, I recently picked up an S2 SC semi-hollow with #7 pickups. Like a few others, they are a little dark sounding for my tastes. I think I've found some good replacements, but before I go spending all that coin, has anybody tried removing the covers? Is it fairly easy? Will it brighten things up? Thanks.

If you're using pure nickel strings, try some different strings too. I was using Pure Blues (all nickel, which is the normal PRS spec) and for kicks switched to Tite Fits (nickel plated steel) and am liking the new strings a lot. Definitely more definition and brightness in the wound strings.

I haven't tried removing the covers, I think the difference there would be noticeable but only slightly.

Someone said in another thread they removed the covers and liked the results. I thought about it myself, but figured the change wouldn't be significant enough to get what I wanted.

OK, thanks for the replies guys. I'd hate to screw them up, so I guess I'll just leave them be and get something else to drop in there.

I guess there are benefits to playing old bright Blackface Fender amps. It makes the muddiest of guitars sound clear!

I love my S2 Semihollow Singlecut.

Yeah mine works really well with my Quilter Aviator open-back combo amp, which is kind of Fender-ish sounding. Doesn't do as well pushing the Mesa/Boogie Rectifier, imo. So I think a lot of opinions of these guitar/pickups will stem from what people are plugging into. I also find the lower output can be perceived as feeble at bedroom volumes. But for stage volume, I'm really preferring low/medium output pickups.
