S2 gets Core Pickups and Electronics

I didn’t own a S2 24-08 but I had the SE 24-08. It was fun. But the 2024 S2 upgrade is worth the extra money. Better tuners. Vastly superior pickups. Better electronics.

I think the new s2 line is amazing. Yes, they got a price upgrade, but they can stand toe to toe with same price fenders/gibsons. I only wish they upgraded the tremolos. I swapped in a MannMade to get the brass like the core.

The new S2 line is crazy good. The new velas are somehow even more magical.

Love them! I’ll have a White satin SH Vela coming my way soon.

Reminded me of what I liked about the reclaimed. It sounds different than the older velas. Punchy and spanky. Chimey. Never Ice picky. More versatile. I’m a big fan. The lack of the hum in the neck position is wonderful. I found the old neck pickup picked up hums easier than some of my strats!

Swapped my s2 24-08…for another S2 24-08. The new one is all satin with ebony board. A nice subtle quilt that absolutely pops in lighting… this photo was taken this morning in some peeking morning sunlight. I found it rings less acoustically than the regular run BUT I prefer the sound of it plugged in! This guitar is slightly brighter sounding, which I prefer for the neck position for clarity. And I adore that the back/neck does not have the grained filled. Feels wonderful with my satin vela semi hollow.

HOLY CRAP that might be the most beautiful S2 I've seen. They should absolutely be doing more satin S2 Customs with natural (or vintage natural burst) finish. That is gorgeous! Is it a special run?

Yes. Baytunes Guitars is having a run of 5 satin quilts. I nearly went for the black quilt. I sat on it too long. The lead singer of Bush bought it last week after playing a festival that the shop and PRS sponsored.

Thanks! So far they have 3 colors: honey, black, and gray blue. They will have 2 more colors but are unsure which prs will select due to changes in the finishes. Those should land later in the summer. They also have a satin CE run. Glorious looking figured maple

Move makes sense, since the SE pickups are great for 1000 dollar guitars, but not so much for 2500 dollar ones. That being said, 350 upcharge is rather hefty in my book, no matter how great the 58/15 LTs are.
The S2 is still waaay cheaper than buying the Core model and with the updated pickups, your closer to the Core sound for half the price.

I will be comparing the Custom 24 and S2 Custom 24 next week.

To follow up on sustain: I installed MannMade upgrade kit but swapped for a steel block and steel screws. Did the trick. Sustain increased with more top end. Certainly brighter than the original run. I credit that to the Ebony board and satin finish.

Dude, that is so hot! You done good with this one. Huge congrats!

I still say the 2024 velas are crazy good. The satin prices are absurdly good for core level electronics. They play phenomenal. The narrow field pickup is a thing of beauty and pairs so well with the Starla bridge pickup. So much nice treble from both pickups (never ice picky). I’m the kind of guy that rarely touches the tone knob for neck pickups. But I find it useful on this model. On the previous velas I thought the neck pickup was cool but at times a bit wooly and tele neck pickupish.

Straight up with no mods: I’d pick the 2024 satin vela (semi for the win) over any SE, other S2, or bolt on class!

Velas are magical!
