S2 Custom 24 2024 updates narrowed the gap to Core?

I noticed here that the S2 series didn't seem to have much respect, but now that the range has received some major upgrades for 2024 (and 10th Anniversary) - American pickups and electrics, mother of pearl inlays, 5-way switch, etc. - it seems that the gap to Core has significantly shrunk. Is that a reasonable thing to say?
Not really, but sort off.
They have always had the same bridges, but different pots, but these are only about $10 each to replace.
The pickups is a big thing, in going to expensive USA PRS pickups, but then both series have ramped up in price.

Used S2s are relatively stagnant at old second hand prices, so the best move as a consumer is to buy a good second hand one and simply upgrade the pickups.

I love my own S2 and I have had a few sets of pickups through the years in it.
For the record, from my own experiments, the PRS sets have sounded the best in the guitar. More expensive second hand, but worth it imo.

I guess a higher retail new S2 with USA pickups may hold more of its sale value over time, but thats a new thing, and time will tell.

If you can, Core is a better bet, medium to long term.

It’s not just the pickups and electrics though. Am I right in saying the 5-way switch (like Core) is a recent upgrade too?

Update or not, S2s don't appeal to me for the most part.

I dislike the assymetrical cut on the Core counterparts and the lackluster/offset figure of the tops.
Retro-styled S2-specific models like a Vela do appeal to me somewhat...but I still have some hang-ups.

The things you mentioned are/were easily upgradeable.
The things I mentioned are not.

I Would Just Buy A Used Core Over A New S2 Or SE But That Is Me. The Way New Prices Are Getting I Would Always Go For More Guitar For The Money And Buy A Nice Used One. YMMV

But that’s the point. You could spend a few hundred updating the pickups etc., but now you don’t have to. Anyway, not sure the 5-way switch would have been an easy upgrade.

Given the significant updates to the S2 Custom post 2024, I'd be hard pressed to take a Core over an S2 if it were to be a working/gigging guitar. I'd feel a lot less ticked off to get some bar/club bumps and bruises on an S2 as compared to a Core. That said, I have and have gigged both S2 and Core guitars. I have both a Core 35th Anniversary 24-08 and a 10th Anniversary S2 and when comparing tone for full on bridge and neck pickups, there's no discernable difference in sound, especially when you're competing with a drummer, bassist and vocals. Sitting alone in my music room, there still isn't much if any gap between the two when you're talking full on humbucker.

As to whether the cost of the Core over the current crop of S2 is worth the premium, that's up to the individual. I've had plenty of really nice guitars that have scarfed necks, including late 90's Japanese Ibanez guitars and have had no issues with the them when compared to my Gibson and Core PRS guitars that have quarter sawn necks.

Some of the other considerations when deciding Core or current S2, however are also the S2 locking tuners versus Phase 3, and the different bridge. The S2 having the same bridge as the CE and SE guitars (molded bridge with Steel block and saddles for the S2 vs machined bridge with brass block and saddles for the Core). Does it make a difference in tone, maybe, but not enough for my ear to ascertain. There is also the difference in inlays, while the 10th Anniversary S2 had mother of pearl, I think that even the updated S2 line is back to using the plastic ivoroid inlays. Does it make a difference other than aesthetic, no, but for the sake of vanity, it may make a difference to some.

S2 is a tough line to beat now that they share electronics with the Core guitars. It's similar to the gap between the Gibson Les Paul Studio and the Les Paul Standard or Custom in the late 90's and early oughts (i.e. before Gibson was using a push pull pot for each volume and tone knob and wieight releiving and relief carving the neck joint on the Studios). It's a question of how you want to spend your cash at the end of the day.

If I were in the market, I'd grab an S2 over a Core as long as I can find one I get along with cosmetically. I find the beveled bodies more comfortable and the Phase III tuners and Gen III bridge are just meh upgrades to me. The S2 parts work great. If anything I'd slap a MannMade bridge on the S2 and call it done.
I believe the S2 has a thinner maple top of one inch vs the 2 inch in the Core as well according to Phil McKights video on the S2 Custom 24.
