Rig “Design” Ideas?

Just thought I’d update:
I sold the Pod Go yesterday. Last week I got a great Craigslist deal on a never used pedalboard combo with a Pedaltrain Novo 18, one spot with 7 outlets on it and some cables. I also ended up buying the guy’s brand new Boss TU-3 tuner, and OS-1 overdrive/distortion combo. I didn’t really want the OS-1, but it was just a great deal. I had bought a Blues Driver on Black Friday from my local shop. One of those “I’m buying something today, and I’ll know what it is when I find it” deals. I had ordered a big muff pi rams head and a Keeley Caverns (canyons? Whichever) before I found the pedalboard, tuner and OS-1. So my slow build was accelerated, at least for version one. I anticipate adding a phaser, looper and some kind of box for going direct to baby mixer and monitors and headphones. Something like the Strymon Iridium. So far, it is working for me where the digital modeler was just option paralysis for me.

To that end, I’m looking for others experience regarding Iridium-like boxes. Amp and cab sims with monitor and HP out. Thoughts?
Fun!

My ampless rig will consist of 2 preamp pedals (that I switch between) going into a Mooer Radar (power amp and cabinet simulator).

The preamps are a Kingsley Page TS for cleans and Revv G3 for dirt.

I haven't tried it yet because I don't have the Mooer Radar yet. Sometime in late January I'll be able to tell you how it is.

Cool! I’ll look for your experience whenever you get them. Man, there are a bunch of things that do direct out type stuff. The Iridium of course, which seems passable to excellent depending on who you ask, and pretty simple, the walrus acs1, the new-ish UAFX stuff which seems pretty nice, cheap but maybe good joyo stuff, 2 notes le clean and cabm+, the simplifier stuff…

I’d love to hear other’s experience with any of these type devices. I’ll end up trying something out of curiosity. I’m currently running the DI out on my Mesa Mkv25 into a little mixer to monitors when I need to ride herd on the volume. The rest of the time it’s the PS2 to speaker when I can make a little more noise.

I highly recommend trying separate pedals. You definitely do NOT need to buy 50 to find the 5 you like. In my case, I bought ~20 to keep 12. Between trying pedals in guitar center and youtube demos, effective purchasing is very doable.

Having physical knobs to turn is really nice. Like, really really nice.
I need to turn knobs:eek::D

Necro-ing my own thread. I was googling Fryette PS2 and IR loader, and my own thread surfaced. So, first an update. I ended up with a UA Dream 65 as my amp in a box. It generally runs into my mixer and monitors. Fuzz, tuner, OD-1, Blues Driver, sugar Drive in front, Kelley caverns behind, and a Boss looper pedal, RC-5 I think. I haven’t really figured out the looper yet. All in good time.

The above works great as a stand alone rig. With a little cable switching, the front end pedals can instead go into the front of my Mkv25, and the delay/reverb into the loop. This can then go into the mixer via the mesa’s cab clone out, or into the combo or a 1x12 cab directly (I usually put a little black amp box in the loop to assist the touchy master volume), or into the Fryette PS2 first, then the combo speaker or 1x12. The UA Dream also works ok with headphones if you use a 2 male TS to 1 female TRS adapter. Oh, and for the really masochistic cable pluggers and switch flippers, the UA can run 4 cable into the Mesa, effectively making a 4 channel amp out of the whole deal. I don’t do that…

I’ll throw out the IR question I was searching that got me back to this thread almost a year later. Any recommendations for an IR loader? I’m interested in options to the Mesa cab clone out. I’m kind of leaning to the Two Notes CabM+. I also saw mention of the Mooer Radar. I’m looking to go from PS2 line out to my mixer. Noting that I have the OG PS2, so no line level adjustment. The OG supposedly has a hot line out. Thoughts and recommendations are welcome.

Hi @aamefford,

Amy from Two notes here! Let me know if you have any questions on C.A.B. M+!

@AmyTwonotes , thank you. I just sent you a rather verbose PM. Once I understand the Cab M+ and the Captor X a bit better, I’ll summarize here for my use case. If you’d rather answer in the thread, feel free to post or summarize my PM with your response here.

Since you have the Fryette Power Station, that will allow you to run a full tube rig at any volume you want.

As far as how to design your pedal rig, that entirely depends on your signal chain and which actual pedals will live on the board. I've used the GigRig G3 and I love it. The power supply can be designed exactly to your needs, it's all bespoke and proper for each pedal.

The H90 may have every world class effect Eventide has to offer, but you can only use two algorithms at a time (and only ONE at a time on an H9). That's a pain in the ass IME. I wouldn't dissuade you from getting one, but you're going to have to decide how you're going to use it and where, and implement a G3-like unit if you ever want to move it in the chain.

I used a Strymon Iridium for a stereo wet/dry/wet output. I ran a humdinger split off the amp's fx send/preamp out into the Iridium input, then used the stereo outs to go through stereo delay and reverb to FOH. It sounded f7cking awesome.

Any recommendations for an IR loader?
A Lot of It Depends On Approach And What You Want To Spend. The Fryette Power Load IR Is A Nice Machine. The Boss Waza Is Nice If You Want Other Things With It. The St. Rock Is Great As Is The Driftwood. If You Want To Go With A Computer Based Situation The Control Hub Is Terrific To Add And Blend IR's.

Of Course, The Quality Of The IR Makes All The Difference In The World. I Made A Thread On IR"s A Good While Ago. EASstudios Has The Best IR's I Have Come Across And I Have Looked At Them All. Here Is A Link. https://mirrorprofiles.myshopify.com/

GGD And Titan Audio Are Also Very, Very Good IR's. Hope This Info Is Of Help To You In Some Way!

Hey thanks @Bogner. I’ve looked at the Fryette PLIR. For now, I’m really looking for a lower cost and serviceable IR loader. The little Mesa has a cab clone direct out that’s pretty decent. I just want to try some other options. The Cab M+ looks like a good, solid option. There are more and less expensive options for sure.

No Worries! Good Luck!! :)

I have a Two Notes C.A.B. M+ that I have used with my Fryette PS-100. They work well together. I like the options in the C.A.B. M+ for moving the mic around and reverb. If I were buying a solution today, I would look at the Fryette Power Loader IR Reactive Load unit. That has the IR loader in it along with the attenuator of the PS series.

If you are looking for something cheap to just add an IR, T.C. Electronic put out a mini pedal that you can load IRs into. That is what I would probably buy if that is all I needed. I don't think it has the options for some of the things in the Two Notes units.

Thanks for this. I’ve had a good experience so far with the PS2. That makes me think the Power Load IR would be a good choice. It’s half redundant though, and I don’t really want to give up the 50 watt amp the PS2 has. Knowing the Cab M works well for you helps. The TC electronics pedal will be worth looking at as well.
