I am hoping the PRS experts here can provide a little help regarding a minor but disappointing dent on the back of neck of a new PRS. I purchased a new 2021 S2 McCarty 594 in February and after an initial inspection placed it back in the bag and box.

I finally had a chance to sit down with it and noticed there is a small dent on the back of the neck. It doesn't effect play and the instrument is a delight to play for both sound and feel. I don't want to put it down.

However, I am bothered by this minor dent and am wondering if this is something a local luthier or even PRS may be able to fix without making the repair too noticeable or costly.

Note: For some reason, I am unable to upload a picture.

TIA - Todd

There’s a post here about posting pictures I believe you need three post to do it. Welcome to the forum. Not much of a finish guy but I bet it could be filled with clear and leveled. That being said more info would be needed, how deep? Is the guitar a solid color (paint) or stained? I would bet it would be a fairly inexpensive repair for a experienced luthier.

Thank you for the message. The color is Whale Blue. The back has some blue hues but looks more black than blue. In terms of the dent size, it is fairly small at about the size of the pointed tip of a sharpie pen.

I am going to contact a local luthier and see what they say.

Thanks again.

If it's not through the lacquer, I'd give a small dab of clear nail polish a try. Dab it in the little ding, let it dry thoroughly and then polish it smooth with an automotive finishing polish that's used in detailing/auto body work after wet sanding. I've had good luck with this approach on a couple of different guitars.

Depending on how large/deep it is, you may be able to steam it out. If you're not comfortable, a luthier can advise you. Basically, by applying moist heat to the area, the dent will pop out. If there are no cracks in the finish, the final product will be barely detectable (if at all).

I had a real good tech fill a neck dent with clear nitro and then sand it down to smooth again - you can still see the dent, but not feel it at all. I even had him do that same kind of fix to a small top-dent on a Gibson R9. It's a very good solution if you're not comfortable with "steaming" the dent out, which was something the tech did not recommend trying (he's the premier guitar tech in Detroit - players from Nashville & LA send him their guitars to work on all the time.)

Thank you all... I would be afraid to create more damage but both the steam and nitro approaches seem like good options to discuss with the luthier.

That's OK. I received my Core McCarty yesterday and she arrived in beautiful shape. I went to install strap locks and when I removed the rear screw it looks like they over drilled the hole at the factory and stuck a plug in the hole. Kind of disappointing in a close to $5K guitar. I have an email in to PRS to see what they have to say.
