Over a dozen years ago, a friend wrote some cool songs, and I was in the mood to produce them, so the two of us recorded them at my place; we also got a good drummer to play with us. It was a lot of fun, and the recordings got us booked into SXSW in Austin.

I loved mixing the stuff, too, and now I wish I'd done more recordings than the TV commercials that can be so forgettable.

Recently, I've been working with some new mastering tools, was looking for material, and stumbled on these old recordings. I really like the writing and singing, so I've been working with them again, mainly for lack of new material!

Patrick Cupples on vocals and acoustic guitar, I'm on the electrics, bass and keys, Danny Cox on drums. Guitars were my McCarty and McCarty Rosewood (I wish I still had them!). PRS wasn't making amps then, these are mostly Mesas (Tremoverb, Maverick, Blue Angel, maybe some Egnater TOL 100).

I still like this material, and had fun tweaking the masters!

Sounds real nice Les. Like it alot.

Thanks guys!

Very nice.
The character of the two is quite different, which I like.

It was a conscious effort to try and be creative with the production. I didn’t want to proceed according to a formula. There are more songs, and they’re all different, too. The idea was to put each of them into its own universe.

The inspiration for doing that harkened back to listening to Beatle records when I was a kid.

By the way, my son Jamie was in high school at the time, and sang backup on Human Race.

Really, the basic idea here was just to play around with some new tools. That I still like these songs, and how they were produced, kind of shocks me!

First song is really cool. Shoulda been on tour with Mellencamp, Springsteen or something! Reminds me of the band Cracker a little bit. Very American R&R with some good musicianship. Fun stuff.

Overall mix and master, I may like the second song better. Sounds like the hit song on the album. Great stuff Les, thanks for sharing.

If only it had been a hit... [harp glissando sfx]

“Hi Les. Here are your messages: Paul McCartney called to say hi, Bob Dylan wants you to play on his next record, and The Edge is wondering how you got that guitar sound on the last record.”

“OK, I’ll return their calls when I wake up., right after I call Paul Smith and Give him the specs on my Signature model.”
