Rarity of Natural Tops

I really like the idea of a ’90s or early ‘00s so I can get the DII pickups and mahogany headstock (without the rosewood veneer). I can be patient...although gas can be a remorseless bastard!

I have had 5 cu22s over the years. 2 had natural and one vintage natural top (Which I have now .... and this one has a trem). All had D2s except one that had the Dragon 1s. I am always on the lookout for them. If I see one that I like, and can afford it, I try to gobble it up. They are out there. It is just a matter of trolling around until you see one you want.

I must have lucked out with this recently acquired '98 CU22. (Rotary and Dragon II's). Never really liked gold hardware until this one landed. Now I can't imagine this particular natural finish with anything but gold. Be patient and good luck. It'll be worth the wait.

If it’s the one I think you’re referring to it’s a stoptail. I’m looking for a trem model. But thanks for keeping an eye out.

Good to know, thanks. I have hope one will pop up.

I hope so, too!

When I ordered a Private Stock Tonare Grand Acoustic, I asked for a natural maple back and sides. The PS Team thought that I might prefer a stain, and recommended Smokey Blonde, a close-to-natural stain with a tiny bit of burst. I said OK, and I like it a lot. So finishes like that might be another possibility?

There are quite a few Faded McCarty Bursts out there as well, and perhaps that's the next best thing. I have one with that finish as well, and love it.

But like you, I think a natural finish is pretty darn interesting!

There are definitely some interesting colors. I’m a fan of vintage yellow, copperhead, and of course blue Matteo. But there’s just something about natural that makes me want to hold out.

I consider the natural finish on maple uncommon rather than rare. One of the more uncommon ones is my Archtop II in natural quilt. It looks even better in person.

Maple grain pops more with a lot of other stain colors thus perhaps one of the reasons brighter or darker colors are considered more appealing in comparison.
