Random. No more or less

I’m more of a slacker who had way too many other things going on to do that 5-6 hours a day stuff. :p

Before I got married, I pretty much played either softball or basketball almost every night of the week. At last 5 days a week. So work, then ball, then come home and shower and THEN get to play guitar for a little while. Of course, I’m no virtuoso.
Well, there is a thing called too much modesty. Trust me I know because I have heard you play. If you did a song performed in front of a group of ppl and then took a poll you would knock it on it’s on it’s a$$. Remember my ears and your fingers do not lie.

You're too kind. 🥰

Ok, sorry about that. I was just thinking that as much as we talk about them here, you would have heard about them, especially the Archon which I've had for a few years.

To relate that, I have always wanted a high gain Marshall type tone, and always wanted some of the many great tones I heard from Mesa Boogies. When I got the Archon, I had 5 Mesa amps, including a Mark V. I sold all of them after getting the Archon. I can be dialed to high gain JCM800 tones, and many other incredible tones, and it's SO easy to dial various tones in. I loved a few of my Mesa amps, but after getting the Archon, I knew it was #1 and they woldn't get played much. Since selling, I've wished I had a couple back, and considered trying a few of the new models (TC, Fillmore, and now Mark VII) but every time I turn the Archon on, I know it's exactly what I want from gain tones.
DTR, I still lust for the Archon! The Blackstar I got last year with my S2 is wonderful, but I still have that lingering desire for the Archon 50. Don't NEED it, but I don't really need every guitar I own either. Well, that isn't entirely true, they all have their unique place and purpose. (Somebody want to explain that to my wife maybe?) If I were 25 (OK 45) years younger I'd have a s**tload more gear, and likely by this time in my life would be a far more accomplished player too. Dabbling at 40 and not getting even half serious until just about 60 is a very late start in this very complex but rewarding journey.
@Lola I'm so far behind on that 10,000 hours I might as well be first. True, I can sit down now and play/practice/work for 5-6 hours on end and still feel like I have more left in me. But I also find I get distracted easily and can go off on some tangent on a different song or even a simple riff or lick that I can find myself doing that for an hour or two because I notice something that I'm not happy with in the way I play it. Recording your stuff and playing it back will do that to you I reckon...and I don't even have anything but my tablet and/or phone to record on (yet anyway). Having another new guitar doesn't make that distraction any better either. Hearing things on four very different PRS guitars is delving into the spellbinding category for me!
God, to be only half my age again... what might have been.🤔

I have been analyzing ACDC tribute bands and comparing them to the original or the studio version. A lot of improvising but it still sounds like it fits the song. This gives me some ideas.

My advice... don't play one. You will quickly "need one!" ;)
The PRS Archon 100 is powered by 4 6L6 tubes, offering full, articulate tone with smooth high end and tight low end. They chug, distort, and get heavy without over-saturating, and they sing without becoming harsh. The 1x12 combo features a single Celestion V-type speaker, offering full, extended lows and sweet midrange.

I have phoned my local music store and i am getting a sound room with the 50 and the 100 watt Archon amps. I am taking my Gibson and my PRS with me. I really will have to wait to get it if I like it. Christmas, Mother’s Day? I made up some BS to them about selling some of my guitars so I could purchase this. They were very accommodating. Plus they know me.

Tuesday at 11 I will be check them both out.
I just know that knowing me I will fall in love with this amp.

@DreamTheaterRules thx fir the heads up on these amps. I didn’t even know they existed. Honestly I have been after a Mesa since day one. Just too far out of the budget when I was looking. I heard my friends and that was it. Tube amps are just the cat’s meow for me. When we were rehearsing at a particular studio, they had a Mark V and I would get there early every time so I could snag it.

Let me know exactly what they are before you look. 100 watt head? That would be USA made. 50 watt combo? Could be US or import. But make sure what you're looking at before you decide as they have somewhat different features and tones. If you don't find out til you get there, that's fine of course, but I can suggest some settings if you can find out ahead of time.

I haven't checked one out for precisely that reason. But damn it's HARD not to!
I was unaware of the differences in the amps though, I didn't know there were import and USA builds, so a huge thanks for that heads up. Although, it certainly makes sense given the 3 lines of guitars we have to choose/drool on. I doubt I would ever go with the 100 though, it's just plain overkill for me, and I might (OK very likely) would never use that much power. But it's like gasoline I suppose, the only time you have too much is if you're on fire.🤣

On another note (OK groan at the pun) I have been so remiss with keeping all my guitars active lately. My poor Custom 24 sat on the rack for about 6 months while I did acoustic stuff all summer with my travels. When I did take an amp and an electric as well as an acoustic with me in the trailer I always took my HB...it just seemed more prudent. At home I always seemed to play either the HB or more often the 594. And of course with the new NF3 I've been really busy getting to know that more intimately. So my Custom got (gasp) neglected...😨😭
Long story short, last night I went downstairs and went straight over and picked up the Custom. Plugged it in and just played and noodled on it. Didn't check it for tune really, just played and listened to what was coming out while the strings warmed as I exercised my fingers. Pulled up a backing track to jam with and thought, gee, this thing is really close in pitch. In finally checking, it was maybe a 1/4 tone low on the 3 lower wound strings, and a tiny bit sharp on the G and B, high E was almost bang on! So much for SE trem machines reputation for being unstable.
Needless to say, my session went far longer than I had intended, and it was well into the witching hour when I finally put the guitar down. Gawd I had a blast! It was like reuniting with an old friend after a long absence. The guitar felt great, was lively, and fairly begged me to go crazy and work it as hard as I wanted to. The only thing I really noticed as a negative was the drop in output on the coil split. which is totally normal on these guitars, I just never really paid a lot of attention to it before. I think the NF3's voice is pretty much responsible for that, and the McCarty doesn't do that as noticeably either.
Lesson learned (remembered?) though. Play 'em all...all the time. Was easy when all I had was the Custom and the HB. Discipline Daryl, discipline!😉

Suggest away. I am writing down all the songs I am going to play. Some mellow to wild songs. I think you know pretty much the style of music I like. Yes please, suggest away. I will write everything down.

I really hope and pray I hate this amp! 😂

The gain knob taper was revised on the import models, to make the gain come on slower. I can make some generic suggestions but whether it's US or import will have a big effect on the gain knob settings.

I will msg you when I am there. If you are busy with work when I do don’t worry about it. I am reading right now about these amps and the myriad of possibilities with these amps. I am no tech wizard but I will be able to figure it out and if not there are sales ppl that can help me.

I just know I am going to love this amp. I am listening to YouTube videos about it. The 50 watt combo. It can conform to anything you want it too! I just looked at what they had in stock and they only have the 2x12 PRS cab and the separate 50w head. They have a 1x12 as well.

They have a 25 watt one too! Now we’re speaking. I have hardly ever turned my Katana up to 100 watts and I don’t need that kind of power at home. 50 watts was more then powerful at any place we played. They were small to medium sized places.

I am also looking at wireless guitar systems now.
I need to stay within budget. I hate when my cord gets wrapped around me or something.
I have been doing some research on these. I could easily spend 1K on this gear but I am
Not.

See if you can find out before you go, which are MIA, and which are imported. If the 50 W head is made in America that would be my choice and you can pick whatever cab you like.

But a 25 W combo or 100 W head that are made in America would both be good options as well depending on whether you want a head and cab or a combo

I can't recommend the cheap Xvive guitar wireless in the pic above, I found them too noisy to use, in several situations. I have Xvive in-ears, but they were not cheap, and they work great. Maybe Xvive's more expensive stuff is actually better? There was so much "shhhhhhhhhh" in the background with those cheap guitar things, I just threw them away.

I think I remember testing them at home, where volumes are lower, and they were ok. But at rehearsals and gigs they were unusable. Rehearsals and gigs is what I wanted them for, at home I use a cord.

I am really lost in this field of gear. Can you make any reasonably priced wireless system? $200 and under. The cords are such a pain. I get really frustrated trying to play and move at the same time.

I had these Xvive wireless units and they worked for a couple of years then died.
Am now using NUX C-5RC. Love the case that can recharge them as well...
