I ended up with a Marshall 1982B 4x12 cab.

Can anybody tell me a little about it and how they compare to 1960 cabs?

Thank!

Isn’t that “just” the bottom cab of a full stack? I can’t recall (so not a Marshall expert) if there was a 1960b cab, but I always preferred buying or renting “b’s” rather that the slant topped “a’s” seemed like they had more bottom end from the slightly bigger box.

As were the slants, b was the straight front. According to the Marshall forum the 82 is supposed to be a heavy duty version of the 1960.

I tried to look on some of these forum sites but most of what I read wasn't concrete fact.

I have three 1960 cabs all labeled jcm800

This 1982b is also labeled jcm800 just like my 1960 cabs lower left corner on front. It is labeled as higher wattage than the 1960s.

I got this in a trade deal on Sunday. It's beat a little and no casters but I only have 100 bucks in it.

Probably doesn't have original speakers but I don't care as I want to put v30s in it anyway.

I was just hoping I wasn't going to be told it was a junk version of the 1960.

Guy told me it was a 1960 but when we looked it was not. I took it anyway since one corner on back had a hit and I could see laminated plywood and not OSB.

I thought it was a safe gamble.

Thanks so much for the info.

You're pretty much golden on any Marshall 4x12 cab at $100. I see one on Reverb, a 1979 model (the cab numbers, like the amps, have nothing to do with the year), for over $1K. That one has the 30 watt Celestion black back original speakers... kind of a higher wattage greenback. The speakers, if in good shape, should sound great.

There’s a Marshall cab database here:

I hope that gets you headed where you wanted to go!

Love the data base info, thank you for that. Exactly what I was looking for.

Mine is 1982b 25xx serial number so it looks like 1976-1977

Sweeet

I may opt for a plywood back though.

Not sure if that makes a ton if difference on tone but I want to try putting 4 different speakers in one of my cabs and mic each one for blending. Since I'm recording only these days I would like to try that.

Also making an isolation room for just my cabs so I can bump up volume and not kill everybody

My take on Marshall cabs is if it has a name badge on the front your good to go. Not the Marshall logo, but the gold tag. The no name cabs are press wood and have cheap speakers.
I think you're spot on here. I've been looking at used cabs and it appears that anything without badge on right front lower corner is a cheaper less desirable 4x12 cab.
