Clapton places a block of wood inside the cavity of the trem block to wedge it, preventing it from moving. Neither he or John seem to want to swap to hard tail. I know that lowering the trem hard against the body is possible, but it means the saddles have to be raised to get the strings back to the desired height above the frets. Everything is a trade-off. Telecasters have the option of putting strings through the body, or straight through the back of the plate holding the saddles. Each affects tone there as well. I prefer the SS bridge on the deck from the factory, drop tuning and broken strings don’t put it out of tune like a floated bridge. Every time I pick up either SS they are in tune, even after months in the case. Same for my 2 other PRS although the trem is floated on the Custom 24. My Strat trem is floated and it isn’t bad staying in tune, but it isn’t nearly as good as my PRS. I like the sound of my SS over my Strat, I think John and Paul knew what they were doing.
