PTC refinish orange peel

Just got my Tremonti back after a refinish from PTC. It had developed the dreaded haze in the V12 finish and PTC were kind enough to do a warranty repair. Upon opening and inspecting it, it has a very noticeable finish orange peel on the top and nitro sink on the back. Has anyone experienced this after a refinish to nitro from PTC? I have one recent PRS with a nitro finish, other than the nitro smell and feel, it is visually the same high gloss finish as the Tremonti had with the original V12 finish.

Have you contacted PRS about it?
I'm sure they have or will...
Doesn't really answer his question and I doubt PRS would answer it either.
He might be looking for similar experiences to determine how he wants to proceed.

This is it. Barring my one previous experience with PRS's Nitro I only know the V12 or poly finishes.

I tend to go right to the source of the problem.
They’re the only ones to remedy the situation.

No, they're not...

**** me once, shame on you; **** me twice...

3rd times the charm, I guess?
Obviously, they're not the only ones who could do a refinish job, but in this case, I think DISTORT6 is saying if PTC screwed up on the original refinish, it's on them to correct it (at their cost) rather than bring it somewhere else and pay for it all over again.

DING, DING, DING!😁
I think we would all like to hear deathworlder’s story, though. Especially the OP.

I don’t think it was a story about his own experience, I think he was saying that the original finish by PRS was bad (developed haze and needed to be refinished), then the refinish by the PTC was bad (orange peel, the fool me once part), so sending back to have PRS refinish it again (the fool me twice part) would be the OP’s fault for trusting them to get it right after they already failed the first two times.

Maybe. Maybe not.
Still would be contacting THEM first with any concerns with what THEY did.

This is the response: "This would be nitro sinking into the grain. Our nitro formula being used in production is a thinner finish which allows the guitar to be more resonant since there isn't as much finish sprayed on. The previous poly/acrylic style finish had more build up so it sat on the wood more. This would be consistent with the nitro finish and we wouldn't have issue with how this was sprayed. It should give more presence and resonance to the guitar."

So they are deliberately going for a thin finish but this doesn't look anything like the 2021 CU24 with Nitro I have.

Still hoping to hear if anyone else experienced this after a refinish to nitro from PTC?

I have a few nitro finished PRS guitars and they all kinda have their own way of setting into the finish. My 35th Anniversary looks a lot like the image you provided....all over the guitar, front and back. The finish definitely sinks into the wood of the guitar.

My 2022 Custom 24 piezo looks a bit more like the poly finishes and doesn't really show any signs of sinking into the wood.

My 2023 Wood Library Custom 24 looks thick and glassy on top, but definitely sinks into the ash on the back.

My latest 2024 Wood Library Custom 24 looks super glossy all over.

A few years back, I had my 2012 Custom 24 refinished from the flaking V12 to the latest nitro finish. It looks glassy all over, as well with no sink-age into the woods.

In my experience, it just varies from guitar to guitar and how that particular piece (or pieces) of wood take the nitro.

Basically, every piece of wood is different and reacts differently.:)👍🤘
