I’m toying with the idea of a unique build PRS. I could find a used mccarty as a base and doing what I’m envisioning via the PTC (or a local builder) OR I could just start from the ground up with a PS order.

Depending on the base guitar, it’d involve some route filling, inlay removal, probably refinishing...

I’m guessing the PTC route would be much cheaper but probably wouldn’t hurt to get a quote for both.

Do you guys recommend anyone to talk to about this?

This is the best route to get the ball rolling. I've had some guitars modified, and refinished, by the PTC. They do AWESOME work. However, I know they are not doing any refinishing at this time. They may have cut back on some of their other offerings, too. Hopefully only temporary. Due to Covid, and the huge back log of new guitars they have orders for.

Believe me, PTC is AMAZING! They have worked on my SE twice, first time was to buff out some cracking binding along the fretboard, the second time was when I went to go bring it back from the first trip. I opened the case and my mom noticed a big old chip right next to the strap button (bottom strap button) and they fixed it in about 3-4 weeks. Looks like nothing ever happened!! They are amazing.

Some napkin math based on the going Reverb rate for players grade McCartys plus my experience with PTC (including a refinish before they stopped) says it’s probably on the order of 50% compared to a new PS. Bear in mind they have never offered PS refinishes on non-PS guitars even if they do eventually offer refinishes again.

I can’t say if that’s worth it, but I can say the PTC does nothing short of awesome work.
