Recently sold the Rickenbacker that I have been playing for the past 10 years. I am pretty well set on getting a PRS, but I figured I might as well ask for some suggestions from those of you who have been playing PRS guitars for long enough to understand what I'm looking for. I play rock/jazz fusion type music, ala King Crimson, Mahavishnu, Syd Arthur. I'm interested in semi-hollow models, although from what I have seen so far most of those are way out of my price range. There are simply so many PRS solid body models to choose from, I'm curious if any particular models may be more or less suited for my style of playing. I am looking for versatility, and I am also looking for suggestions for pick-up swaps.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

If you're looking for versatility and semi-hollow, I would definitely look at the the S2 Custom 22 Semi-hollow. You're going to get a little more versatility (in my opinion) than either the Zach Myers or the S2 Singlecut Semi-hollow. I actually own a Zach Myers (and played several S2 Singlecut Semi-hollows while shopping for it), and while it's a fantastic guitar, versatility is not its strong suit. It's got a nice LP vibe that is great if that's what you're looking for, but I feel that my S2 Custom is definitely able to get a wider variety of tones.

Speaking of Mahavishnu, here's John McLaughlin playing one of his solid body PRSes. It's a Private Stock, with custom features, but it has the 408 pickups. I can't tell if it has the Signature Limited switching (which also comes on Paul's Guitar). He also plays what appears to be a Private Stock with a DGT control layout.

If solid bodies are good enough for McLaughlin...incidentally, he performed with a PRS at the 30th Anniversary Event last June, and was incredible. Did some stuff going back to Birds of Fire.
