Hey everyone.
I thought this could be a bit of a fun exercise for everyone on this forum. I think it's pretty well known in the industry by now that PRS's are extremely versatile, "Jack of all trades" sort of guitars.
So this got me thinking. In terms of the "established" and well known sounds, how do the various models stack up? And I thought the best way to show this is through a radar chart.
Please note that I'm only rating guitars I've actually owned/played. So there are tons of exclusions because I think it's pretty unfair for me to assume what a DGT sounds like, etc. That's why I'm hoping that the rest of you can comment or possibly make your own radar charts so I could see what they look like.
Before I create an uprising, this is all just my personal opinion!
Here is what my chart ended up looking like:
Few things to note:
-I ranked these on a scale of 0-100, and for simplicities sake I kept the values at multiples of 25 (25,50,75,100).
-the absolute minimum value is 5, and not 0. Reason being is that giving a value of 0 makes the chart look a bit funky. For example, a Silver Sky is obviously a Strat, so I gave it a 100 for the stratocaster sound, and a 5 for the rest of the sounds. Giving a 0 would make it look like a completely straight line.
-the two hardest sounds to achieve (based on my experience) are a Telecaster and a P90. I'd say overall the split coil sounds on a PRS are probably closest to an underpowered Strat.
-the old rotary switch on Custom 24's is extremely unique. I feel like I can get decently close to a Tele bridge sound, as well as an in between Strat sound. Take a look at the chart and it's pretty obvious that it's abnormal. However, I do find it very hard to achieve a vintage PAF sound.
-the app on Google play store to make this is called "Radar Chart Maker". I encourage some of you to try it out. It would be great to get people to characterize the crazier models, like a 513!
