hi, guys, im steve, im new to the forum and prs guitars, ive had a few different guitars fender strat, chapman ml2, and now coming tomorrw is a prs se tremonti custom, i know that these guitars are shipped with 9 guage strings, i usually play with 10 guage strings, do you think i will notice much difference with the 9 guage strings instead of setting up the guitar and widening the nut for 10,s, rather ask you guys first, before going ahead and changing the nut slots, cheers steve

To me it is very noticeable, but I suppose it is personal preference. I think others have changed out the 9s for 10s without nut issues. This is one of the reasons I went with the Bernie over the other SEs. I just didn't want to deal with the nut issues.

Moving up to 10's is is the way to go if that's what you're used to plus the tone and tuning stability is better, just make sure to get it set up for the different gauge. It's not just the nut, you have to reset your intonation and may have to adjust the truss rod too. If you're unfamiliar with all that have your guitar shop do it, it's worth the $.

Welcome to PRS land!!!

If you are used to 10s you will certainly notice the 9s, but you might be OK with them.

Swapping out for 10s is easy, may not require any nut slot tweaks/widening (especially if you lube it with chapstick or nutsauce or whatever). You may or may not notice enough difference to require a tweak to intonation. I typically check/adjust intonation anyway with a new guitar, so minor adjustments for a string gauge change are no big deal. I have yet to fiddle with a truss rod on any of my PRSi, but maybe I'm lucky.

thanx for all your replies guys, im ok with setting up guitars, so i will play the guitar with 9,s on it for a few days, and see how it sounds to me, if then i swap the strings to 10,s, i will either widen the nut slots or just change the strings and see how i get on, looking forward to giving it a good run down tomorrow, probably after a few months, i will then change a few things, ie locking tuners, new tusq nut, and may be next year see if it needs a pick up change, from what ive seen the stock pups seem quite decent, im not one of these guys that just change pick ups for the sake of it, may be the usa tremonti pick ups could be an option?

I changed my '13 SE CU24 from 9's to 9.5's and liked that quite well. I did do the setup as mentioned above. Since then, I've sold it and bought one of the 30th Anniversary SE CU24's and I had them change it to 10's, do the nut slots and set the intonation (pics soon), and a pickup swap. I decided to let the pros do it since they make their living that way and I'm just a hobbyist on setups. I didn't see a need to completely change out the nut, hope I wasn't wrong on that. I should have it in a day or two and report on it before the week is out.

Quick question on the Tremonti SE = is the body thickness the same as a 245? or is it thinner?

My SE 245 and SE Tremonti Custom are the same body thickness. The 245 is very light. The Tremonti is hands down the heaviest of all my PRSi. It also sustains like a(n) MF and has balls to the walls thick tone.

just received the prs, its a beautiful guitar, did a quick string change to 10,s, set up the guitar, blocked the trem, as i dont use it, everything looks good, going to see if the nut slots are ok over the next few days, if not ,i will widen them, looks ok so far, im very impressed by the quality of this guitar for the money, could be a long term investment in prs on the way i think, i also was looking at the semi hollow, will wait and see how this one goes first, cheers steve

Had to polish the string slots in the nut on mine as the strings would bind and not hold tune with 10s. May I suggest adding the USA Tremonti pickups? They change the guitar so much and I'm glad I did it. I also coil tapped the bridge pickup to a push/pull pot which opens up the sound a lot.
