Hi, I recently bought an SE Standard 24 and wanted to get some opinions on how others that own one like it, or don't like it. I actually had to return the first one that I bought from Musician's Friend because it had some rust spots on the fret wire. I received the same model a few days ago and some of the fret wire seems a little rough looking but it plays well. I'm going to take it to a local shop for a full setup soon but wanted to see if anyone else had issues or if they are completely happy with the guitar. It's a $500 guitar but I had a 12% off coupon, so I only paid $439. Thanks for any input!

I've got one and like it. It's a great guitar for the money. I wound up changing the nut on mine and adding Schaller locking tuners. Otherwise it's completely stock and I love the way it plays and sounds. In my case I caught a sale at GC and got it for $400.

Thanks for the info, I actually think the nut is good on it (so far) but if I change it, is there one that fits it or do you just have to buy one and make it fit with some work?

Hardly any work at all. Removing the old nut is very easy. Get an old ruler, put the edge against the nut, and then give it a very light tap with a hammer and it'll come right off. As far as the new nut there are a couple of options. One of our PRS brothers (The Fight) had an extra PRS core nut and graciously sent it to me. You can also get a Tusq nut that is made for the PRS. Once you remove the old nut make sure the nut slot is clean. Then you put the new nut it and make sure it's lined up before you glue it. I just used a couple of drops of medium viscosity CA glue (basically superglue). The medium CA doesn't set immediately, so you can line it up correctly without worry and then clamp it and let it set overnight.

I put a bone nut and locking tuners. Still goes out of tune easily. Even after a luthier did a setup.

I love the fretboard and the access to the upper frets. It is very easy to play. I love the fact you can tighten the term bar to the pressure you like.

I have ordered some iron gear pickups. I will a tech to set up the guitar again when he installs the pups.

I am genuinely shocked. I have the same model and what impresses me most with mine is the attention to detail that was given to the board and the frets. Everything is silky smooth and levelled to perfection. The fret ends are not even there. A joy to play. The Indonesian plant did a fantastic job. Really superb.

Elsewhere, the push-pull tone control is very slack in operation but this is nothing to cry about.

It sounds to me like your frets need polishing and this is one of the easiest jobs to do on guitars.

Just taken some quick shots for you to see how mine looks like now, some months since the frets were polished.

It still sounds like a bad setup. I just hope the luthier wasn`t some guy in a chain store who doesn`t know PRS. I have 5 trem PRS, core, S2 and SE. THey all have a PRS USA nut and a good setup. THey all work really, really well. I use the trem a lot. I can tell you where to have the work done if you`re in the DMV.
