I recently bought a PRS SE Custom 7 string (black). Based on all of the reviews, I thought I would surely have to replace the stock pickups. But I really think they sound great, and I play metal. I have heard people describe the pickups as being muddy, but I haven't found that to be the case at all. I run the guitar through a Hughes and Kettner Coreblade amp with a 4x12 over-sized Boogie cab.
I'm used to playing pickups that are not as hot, (I own a John Petrucci Music Man Guitar), and I like a clean sound without any breakup. I was able to accomplish this by backing off the pre-amp gain on the clean channel of my amp. Problem solved; it sounds very clean now. I love the split coil sound too! I never adjust the tone level, so I replaced that knob with a switch so I could easily tap the coils. As for distorted sounds, I have also backed off the gain. The volume knob is also extremely effective in cleaning up the distorted tones if I want to, although, when I set up my amp correctly there is no need for that.
Maybe I have a special guitar or something; the pickups are great. I've had it for a month, and I love how well it plays. I can reach any note on the neck with ease. I am also enormously impressed with the tuning stability and intonation. I have never had a guitar stay in tune so well. That alone was worth the price to me!
Most of the clips I've heard of this guitar on YouTube do sound very muddy to me, and I'm not sure why. Mine doesn't sound muddy even when I use a lot of gain.
In my opinion, this guitar is worth much more than I paid for it. Anyone looking for a 7 string guitar should give it try.
