PRS S2 - Scratchy pots need replacement

Dear PRS users,

the volume pot on my PRS S2 from 2013 is very scratchy. I would like to replace it, preferably with one that works in a similar way. It should be a logarithmic audio taper pot, right?

But I'm still having problems finding out what diameter the pot needs to have without having to widen the hole in the guitar and at the same time making sure that the lampshade knob of the PRS S2 still fits on it.

What do I have to pay attention to?

Thanks :)

I would do what Russ did, contact PRS customer service. If that doesn't get you anywhere, you can buy the PRS pots that they use in the core / US model guitars. They come with the capacitors already on them. I usually keep a few on hand just in case. I usually buy mine here.

Echoing - Deoxit. If that doesn’t fix it to your satisfaction, then PRS, all as noted above. A tech showed me the little hole on the body of the pot where you squirt the Deoxit. Not on the shaft as I had been doing… I’m less thrilled with the “Pre-USA electronics” S2 pots. My single datum point is my only S2 needing a push pull tone pot replaced under warranty. Small sample size, but 50% failure rate for me.

Thank you for your answers. Deoxit unfortunately costs 30€ here in Germany, that is a lot and works as far as I know only temporarily. I will write PRS support, but I don't think I will still get an exchange poti after 12 years.

Since you are in Germany and the guitar is 12 years old, you can save your time. They won't send you a pot for a guitar that old, more than likely. It would be faster to just buy new pots. They aren't that expensive. Although, you need to know how to solder to put them in. If you don't know how to do that I would take it to someone to get it swapped out. If it were me, I would possibly swap them all out to the US pots if you can.

I missed the age. No freebies for this one! My ‘03 Santana had a bad pot and scratchy switch. I bought the prewired switch and pots loom from PRS, about $110 US, and had a tech install it, and do a set up while he was at it, another $150 US. I’m personally not comfortable with a soldering iron close to nicely finished wood. Best with your repair. I second the motion for USA pots if you get from PRS.

Wd40 makes a contact cleaner that is significantly cheaper in UK, maybe available in Germany.

Deoxit seems to more expensive for us in Europe because it’s a US product.

The WD40 Contact Cleaner is good stuff. I use it. It is part of their professional series stuff. It is NOT regular WD40! Don't make that mistake.
