Hey all, i managed to acquire gold 85/15 with 4 conductor from a 24-08. Now to spend the next few months working out how to mount and use the proper coil splitting in my cu24 (and get the simplicity of the 24 08 and the lack of volume drop from other coil split options).

Options so far are:

  • Just mount the normal way (and defeat the point of having the extra 2 cables)
  • introduce push pull tone and volume pots and turn switch to a 3 stage (basically the same as a 24-08 but using push pulls (but pp volume may be weird)
  • add the two switches but hide them inside control cavity (and make that easy to open with magnets) or
  • maybe use some tiny microswitches and mount to side of pickup rings.
One thing for sure is I'm not drilling two holes anywhere on the body.

I like the idea of pp volume and tone and make the blade a 3 way, seems the neatest option. The question is what pp volume could i use that doesn't require hardware mods? Did prs ever use such a thing?

Also haven't broken the streak of every single time I buy used pickups they come in a bkp box. That company dominates the retrofit market.

Yes, PRS has used them - my PS has PPs on both volumes and PP sweet switches on both tones. And a three-way toggle switch, the way pickups were meant to be selected. :p

Sorry, excuse my ignorance (new to PRS really), what is the PS? And is a sweet switch the same as a Push Pull?

I'm guessing my 5 way blade can be kept and just soldered as a 3 way by simply only using those positions (although I guess with jumper wires you could potentially do other wonderful things with the other 2).

Don't mind me, PS = Private Stock I guess and Sweet switch is some kind low pass filter - sorry should have googled first.

Any idea where one would acquire a PRS volume PP? Or would you by chance have the part number from your guitar?

Sorry didn't realise they were the same thing, thought they'd have a different taper or something.
now that you mention it, you do have to make a decision about whether you want audio taper or or linear taper volume.

I've installed the 21 tone Jimmy page kits on ~10 of my les Paul's which I no longer have, this is one kit yyou can buy.
  • 2 – 500k audio taper, short-shaft (3/8″ or 9mm) PUSH/PULL volume controls
  • 2 – 500k linear taper, short-shaft (3/8″ or 9mm) PUSH/PULL tone controls
  • 2 – .047 value Sprague “Orange Drop” capacitors
The last few kits purchased, I believe used all 4 of the push pull pots were identical all of them were linear taper,
so it will work I think actually many people prefer linear volume pots.
here was the last kit I used 920 D custom shop.
  • 4 - Bourns Push/Pull 500K Pots
  • 1 - .015µF Orange Drop Capacitor by Sprague Electric (Neck)
  • 1 - .022µF Orange Drop Capacitor by Sprague Electric (Bridge)

so yes you can buy several high-quality makers CTS Bourns DPDT ( double pole double throw) coil splitting push pull with audio taper or linear taper.
I believe the PRS tone is linear
you can also get this anywhere

Cheers

PRS only uses A-taper (audio) pots, across the board. Historically, there’s been some use of B-taper (linear) by some brands, but it’s cheaper to buy one type and increase your order volume to get a customized spec. We get what they spec.

Just in case anyone didn't know;

They're called audio taper because the taper matches the way our ears hear sound levels - which isn't linear. I believe the audio taper is logarithmic though to our ears we perceive it as a smooth increase in volume throughout the range. A linear taper would sound to us like all the volume comes on at once.
