PRS Private Stock

I have two questions, and I can't seem to find anyone who knows the answers. I'm hoping you guys do.

I am saving to order a PRS Private Stock. I have upper four figures saved right now, and I want to save double what I have just to make sure I have enough to cover it. However, if I can't get the exact specs I want, then I'd much prefer to spend that sort of money elsewhere. What's the point of ordering a custom shop guitar, if you can't get what you want?

Question one:

I am particular about the dimensions of the guitar necks I use. I know PRS usually uses a 10" radius on most of its models. I much prefer a flat 12" or 14" radius.

Every time I ask a dealer if ordering a flat 12" or 14" radius on a PRS PS neck is possible, they tell me they're not sure. Moreover, every dealer quote form I've seen only allows for 10" or 11.5" radius.

Does anyone know if it is possible to order a flat 12" or 14" radius on a PRS PS guitar?

Question two:
Does anyone know if it is possible to get a string-through tune-a-matic bridge, rather than the tune-a-matic with the stop-tail piece?

I appreciate everyone's help!

Thanks.

I would think you could get a string though no problem. The neck radius I'm not sure about as pretty much every PS I've seen has one of the 'normal' neck shapes and specs.

To find out for sure, on both counts, you would need a dealer to submit a formal quote to the PS department.

I believe the Santana and 12-string models have an 11.5" neck radius. I'm not sure how much manual effort would be involved in flattening an 11.5" neck radius to a 12" but the more manual effort that's involved...I'd assume the more $ it would cost. It be even more if you don't like the 24.5" Santana neck scale length. You'd really have to work with an experience Private Stock dealer.

I would think it is possible to have a tune-o-matic (especially using the intonation bridge part of the PRS 2-piece bridge) for a string through the body bridge. Again, it's not on a production guitar so it will be extra.

I think your ideas sound great. Best of luck!

PS is a blast if you have an experienced dealer. They know the drill. Also, I am unaware of the PS team saying no to any non-aesthetic (or aesthetic in decent taste) if you have the cash. Good luck with your build.

Thank you for all the very helpful replies. It seems what I am asking is possible, but I've been talking to the wrong dealer.

Let me ask you guys this: can anyone recommend an experienced PRS/Private Stock dealer? Location is unimportant to me, as long as it's CONUS.

You need a quote! If I were you, and you can still only get the 11.5, then I would go with the 11.5. Its still noticeably flatter. If you are unsure then go play a Santana. Good luck.

I am positive I have seen string thru PRS guitars. No idea why they wouldn't do it.

I have seen PS guitars with crazier requests than those... Like this:

My Private Stock was a Santana 1....I was given the choice of radius. I chose 11"...but at the time, I believe I had a virually unlimited choice as to how I wanted it to be carved.

Yea, I don't think I'm asking for anything outrageous or crazy.... and that picture you posted is one seriously outrageous guitar. LOL

Very interesting. Did they say, "Hey Doc Bennet, you can choose between 10" or 11.5"," or what is more, "What radius would you like on the neck...?" with the impression being that anything was possible?

I was given the choice of whatever radius I wanted...I like a wide profile and a very chunky neck, so the 11" was recommended to me by my VERY KNOWLEDGABLE dealer.

Yea, that gallery is awesome. That's one of the reasons I posted here, because I didn't see anything like the specifications I mentioned.

I really wish you hadn't given me links, because I clicked on them to view the gallery once again. My wife finally had to fastened a drool cup around my neck.

For those of you interested, I have some follow-up information.

It is absolutely possible to get a string-through with tune-a-matic bridge. It's also totally possible to specify any radius that you want on the neck. Even further, it's totally possible to specify the exact dimensions for not only the neck, but for the guitar itself. For example, if you want the body to be rounded and smaller, it's totally possible to specify that, as long as you have it all measured out and can provide those measurements.

Now, this sort of thing really escalates the price, of course. Nonetheless, if you want it, the PS folks have no problem building it for you. Anything is customizable. If you can think it, they can build it.

Hey man glad you got the answer you wanted! Stick around, keep us informed, we'd all LOVE to see what you come up with! Plus being around here is great motivation to play more, talk about PRSes, and of course, induce GAS!

Have they changed their stance on unicorn shaped guitars yet?

 Not sure about that; however, for 6 figures, I'm sure they'd love to build you a unicorn shaped guitar!

Yea, the GAS is what I'm worried about!
