Hi. Anyone have any info on PRS headstock shape/design changes over the years? In particular, I had someone offer me a 2010 PRS Starla. The headstock shape looks different than other 2010 models I've seen and looks like an older PRS style.

They did a few limited runs with the Santana headstock, different models. I have a Ted McCarty with it. Mine is essentially a McCarty single cut with the Santana headstock. I think they did a run of the Mira with the Santana headstock back then too.

FYI, they won't even allow you to do this through the private stock program. I know because I asked. You won't see this on any guitars outside of those limited runs now. There may be a handful of private stocks out there with it that are not a Santana model but they will not do it anymore.

Call me shallow but I passed on a pretty good one of these locally, because when I saw the headstock, I was not in love. The headstock shape is totally cool. I just can not personally get over the gray/black on a sunburst guitar. To me, it is just an eyesore I couldn't live with. I get the pseudo nod to the holly overlay, and black headstock… all that. But it just didn't work for me.

And the kick in the pants is, I know it was a bunch more work for PRS to do. It just me being shallow and all that.

Sounded really good.

If it was the G brand it would have a black headstock on a burst finish guitar. I never really even thought about the color of it. They are a flamed maple overlay that they stained. You can see the figuring through the one I have. I think most of them are like that. My Ted is honestly a pretty magical guitar. This has been confirmed by pretty much everyone I have let play it as well as my opinion. The thing is one of those guitars that just went together right. Mine isn't a 10 top and has a bit of a plain look to it. I is the faded McCarty burst finish and is quite yellow in person. There is plenty of flame in the top but it just doesn't pop. But man, it really does play and sound good.

A thought I just had was, I wonder if changing the nut to the new PRS bone nut would make these guitars even better. They didn't use a nut like that when they built them.
