My guess is they didn’t catch on because people have different preferences on straightness of the neck and want control over that characteristic of the setup.
I totally agree with you here. I have gone through hundred of guitars over the years and I have my few favorites. These are the ones that I set up feel the way I want. Same goes for string gauge, neck thickness and so on. What is going to inspire me to play more than anything is to feel at one with the instrument and if I just do not like how it feels, not going to buy it or play it. I always go feeling first then sound. A lot of the sound can be changed as well via pickups or amps or pedals or EQ. For example I always wanted a PRS 513, loved the versatility, loved the sound. But they refused to ever do it with a pattern thin neck. I can not stand big thick necks, I have no idea they have done other models just experimenting and done pattern thin.
I had a McCarty Single cut with Soapbars and 10 top. One of the best sounding guitars I have ever owned, I still remember the sound of that guitar. I sold it few years ago. Owned the thing 5 years probably played it 20 times, loved the sound but the thick neck and weight I couldn't get past it.
