PRS Custom 24 Semi vs. CE 24 Semi

Hi folks,

It's been awhile since I had a PRS and that itch is finally being scratched...

I'm looking at a (barely) used, late model Custom 24 Semi Hollow or the same in a CE 24. Both are around the same price.

They both have undramatic scarlet red tops without binding. I'm okay with either since I only play for myself. My dog usually runs upstairs.

Any opinions on which to get, or what I can expect with each, or, well, anything to convince me to go one way or another? Obviously, I know that the Custom has a set neck, etc. but would appreciate any advice from you experts as I renew my vows with PRS.

Thanks in advance.

Are you quite certain that the one is a Custom 24 Semi-Hollow? I’ve never seen a semi-hollow C24. That doesn’t mean anything, other than that if it is a Custom it’s a rare guitar.

Odds are it’s a CE 24 SH that someone has mislabelled, especially given that it’s the same color and price as the one that is labeled as a CE 24 SH.

I've seen a number of Custom 24 Semi-Hollow guitars, but they've all been Wood Library runs. If the it is indeed a Core Custom 24 Semi Hollow at the same price as a CE Semi Hollow, definitely get the Custom. As stated above, better bridge and tuners and typically a better looking top.

Thanks, all. It's a set-neck, and has "Custom" imprinted on the truss rod cover...Having said that, I've questioned it. Definitely not a fancy top, and the only ones I've seen have been better looking. It's a 2 hour drive from me so I can't really inspect beforehand.

If you can get the serial number you can email PRS customer service and they will tell you exactly what it is.

Other than visually, the easy way to know it's an S2 is that the serial number starts with "S2".

There hasn't been an S2 Custom 24 Semi-hollow, there have been Core Custom 24 Semi-hollows. There's one for sale on Reverb now that's in Japan.

Sounds like sE or s2. Are the pickups full bobbins like 85/15 or regular ones like most brands? Can you upload pics? I’m sure we can help you. I love the CE semihollow line

Modern CEs are great guitars, but post 2009-ish they are more like S2 instruments with USA pickups.

Well, a little embarrassing to admit: I requested the serial number (as you guys wisely suggested) and it's an S2. Wrote to PRS, and received the following info:

"Serial# 18 S2 is a 2018 Custom 22 Semi-hollow, with a Flame Maple top, Mahogany back, Mahogany neck with a Standard profile, East Indian Rosewood fretboard with bird inlays, PRS patented molded tremolo, 85/15 “S” treble and bass pickups, finished in Scarlet Red, with nickel hardware."

This was a Craigslist sale, the pictures weren't great, and I was thinking that this might be a great deal on a Core. The seller has been decent, but I haven't gotten a lot out of him. I don't know much about the S2 line but from what I know - SE electronics, basically? And a simpler carve? (Again, pictures made it difficult.). It's not exactly a steal, I'll probably hold out and keep looking for that perfect fit - unless you experts can talk me out of that plan...

I do want to thank you all for all of the great help with this. I've been playing for a long time, and I had a gorgeous PRS semi hollow many years ago (you know how that goes). I'd like to get some semblance of it back. Thanks again...

Hunt goes on. Don’t discount the CE line of semi’s. Sometimes crazy dumb deals pop up where it’s nearly $1k off brand new. Best of luck and as others have said: share photos when you find the one

Well that certainly changes things, especially being a Custom 22. For me I’d go with the CE24 because you are getting core electronics. But if you prefer 22 fret guitars than the Custom 22 would be the answer. They are both great guitars and you can’t go wrong either way, just the S2 may require a pickup swap as well if you don’t like the stock pickups.
