I would like to get your thoughts on the 2009 2010 limited run custom 22, 5 way, swamp ash picks ups, and a middle single with trem. Any help would be grateful.

Thanks Everyone

I’ve had a Special 22 for about six months. It’s basically a Custom 22 with a middle single coil.

The Swamp Ash pickups are a delight! I’m terrible at describing pickups, but for my low to mid-gain playing they’re wonderful. I particularly like the neck and middle together with the neck split. It’s just a great sound and unlike any others I have.

I wish I knew more about the middle pickup. It’s a Fralin, but that’s about all I know. There’s no hum or noise that I can hear from it when it’s isolated.

I’ve read in other threads that some folks had heard these guitars were weight-relieved, but I don’t think that’s the case. Mine isn’t light or heavy, but perhaps around 8lbs.

All in all, a really nice, somewhat less common guitar. All of the wonderful refinement of a later Custom 22, with an extra couple of tricks and some really nice pickups.

RC Mike, thank you so much, thinking about trading a Santana retro for one in a straight up trade.

Straight up trades are nice. When you've got a chance to get a guitar that speaks to you for one that doesn't, it's pretty cool.

Value on the Special 22s isn't terribly high, from what I can tell. Mine was under $1k, because Guitar Center had no clue what it was. They'd sold one for $2k last year, so I was surprised that their system didn't put the same amount on it. (They'd had it listed as a Special 22 Hollow Body, which wasn't quite right.). Reverb had a few over the years for $2.5k to $4k+.

So after researching clips of the 22 special on YouTube, I have decided it is not my cup of tea. Sergiodeblanck, you are correct!

I am going to hold on to the retro. The only problem I have with the Santana is the neck carve, I prefer the old fat rounded neck carve. Thank you both for your response. Just a note, this Santana Retro is the last gold top they made, the color is discontinued unless you go PS. It also took 3 yrs to make due to the factory not happy with the 1st 3 that were attempted. I owe Jack Gretz a huge thank you.

Thanks Team!
