Hello all,

I'm considering buying a 2014 PRS CU 24 with maple neck and have some questions.

1. The back of the neck appears to be "unfinished" which I would like very much, am I correct on that assumption?
2. Is there are a substatantial difference in tone between a mahogany neck?

Thank you for reading

heres mine with maple neck. It feels unfinished but I seem too remember an interview where Paul was talking about the "finish" on the types of necks. Something about them having a special finish applied that sinks into the wood, they then sand it of and even though the wood feels unfinished its still sealed. Mine feels exactly like my Wolfgang neck(and also every other unfinished neck Wolfgang and ebmm Ive had) if not better than.

Yup, the finish is in the wood, so it feels unfinished; super slick and awesome!

As for tone: I wouldn't say substantial....the effect to my ears is more subtle. All things being equal, there will be a little more snap and brightness compared to a mahogany neck, but really, they are pretty interchangeable. A rosewood neck has a far bigger impact IMO.

Thank you for the message Roger Roy. Wow, beautiful guitars. Coincidentally I own a Peavey Wolfgang and LOVE the unfinished back of the neck. To, very personal opinion, there is no better option than an unfinished back of the neck. Love to feel the "bare" wood. Lacquer paint makes my hands stick especially when hands get sweaty. The ones I'm looking at still have the ebony fretboard so this combination to me is the perfect one. I still can't tell if I'm looking at an unfinished neck. Here's the link to one of the ones I'm looking at http://www.ebay.com/itm/PRS-WOOD-LI...428?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35e82ef214

Wow, that's a nice looking axe! From what I understand, it will feel unfinished, but as other have said, it has been finished in a manner that seals the wood to make it last.

When I got my maple-backed PRS neck. I had a hard time that people were saying these things were finished.

Wish they could use the same process for mahogany.

Ive owned 15-16 Wolfgangs between the Peavey first year quilts, custom shop and now his new EVH brand and also various EBMM EVH's and Axis.(They've been my favorite guitars for the last 7 years because Im a HUGE Ed head and I love them lol) If you love the Wolfgang neck the PRS maple neck will feel almost like home to you

I'd be curious to know if they could. Now, if the neck is painted, that wouldn't work, but I wonder if it is just stained or if there's no stain at all if it would work? It could just be the make up of maple that makes it possible though. Interesting, I'd like to get more info.

I would like to know if that would work on mahogany as well. I don't like the feel of the painted neck especially when playing outside and it's humid. Too sticky for me.
