Anyone get their hands on one yet?

Thinking of this or a Mesa Recto 25 to go along side my Mark V:25. Any input will be appreciated.

I've played the Archon 25 and Rectoverb 25 side by side a few weeks ago. I liked both. Different speakers in the combos so there's that, maybe not an exact comparison. I didn't play the clean channel on the Rectoverb though. The Archon felt a little more "British" to me by comparison, almost in that it didn't feel like 6L6/5881 family of tubes. I actually forgot it used 5881's and thought they were EL84's. Archon is somewhat brighter in the mids and mid-highs. I'd be curious to compare them both with V30's. I'm not familiar with the "Fillmore 75" the Rectoverb uses, so I'm not sure how it's voiced. Compared to their big brothers, the Rectoverb sounded more similar to the big guy while the Archon felt slightly different. Maybe that's because I'm way more familiar with the big Archon since I use it all the time. I seemed to need to EQ it differently. Between the 2, I think the Archon had a little faster attack and tighter sound. I guess similar to the differences between the big boys. Both were nice amps and I could get along with either. I know that's not exactly the comparison you wanted, it's been a long time since I've played the Recto 25 head although I liked that quite a bit too when I played it.

I've got the Recto 25, and there's not much it won't do...exceptionally well.... :top:
And being a Mesa, it's built like a tank!

Thanks for responding.

I'm not the best at describing tone but I feel like I need to add something with a little more thump to the setup. Less middy maybe?

I really dig the mark v:25 through my 2x12 recto cab. It definitely has more mids then I'm use to but using the EQ I've tamed it somewhat.

Played a 2002 Peavey Triple XXX half stack for the past 12 yrs. I felt the bass response on it was great. Nice thud with palm muting.

I'm thinking the recto or archon I'd use more for rhythm and for leads use channel two on the mark v:25.

Keep the clean on channel one of the Mark. Mesa's cleans are some of the best IMHO. The clean channel was the one thing that I never liked about the Triple XXX.

Either of the amps should have good thump to them. Not sure which is better, I wasn't really giving them the thump test. The RV25 sounded a little rounder/looser(not in a bad way), Archon 25 was tighter/more immediate. I'd probably buy a used 100w of either one used first, but that's just me. The Archon, at least, has an awesome master volume. There's a reason people use 100 amps, 95% of time it's not for the volume, it's for the "big sound" that only a 100w amp can offer. That's what the XXX/4x12 gave you. You might try a Port City cab sometime. I had a 1x12 that I used for lower volume playing. They take the unused low end that gets lost in the cab and throw it back at you out front.

Thanks for the advice. I should have said I'm "downsizing". Selling off my big amps to make room. Got a baby on the way so I'm losing my music room and everything's got to fit in my office. If not I would definitely pick up a 100watt Archon.

Sold my Mesa Tremoverb and got my Peavey halfstack listed now.

GC has got the trade in trade up thing going on right now and I got another coupon from them so I was thinking of trading the halfstack in towards the archon 25.

I'll try to check that cab out when I can.

Well I pulled the trigger and should have an Archon 25 in possession sometime next week. I'll report back once I get it.

One word - birth control. :vroam:

Seriously, congrats on the impending arrival. Have you considered a speaker simulator, like the CabClone or the Palmer things? I've been using the CabClone - very happy with it so far.

Hahahaha!

Picked her up today. Haven't had much time to play but so far she's a keeper.

Played my SE Tremonti Custom with \m/ pups and Standard 22 with Tremonti pups through the amp.

Got some sweet tones right off the bat. If I ever get back into the 50watt plus realm I can see myself picking up a full size archon.

I'll do a better write up after I get some time. Gonna hook up my recto 2x12 cab this weekend.

Sounds like you'll be having a fun weekend! Congrats!
