PRS 305 mods!!

Awesome!
Sorry if this is a dumb question - what made you choose to go with the 85/15 (or really any "traditional" humbucker) versus the "513 version" of a humbucker? Purely tone?
(I love mods like this, btw)

That is actually a GREAT question....and I have an answer for you. Two things I was told by PRS about installing a 513/509 style humbucker...
1) As the 513 pickups are physically bigger, there would be more routing, measuring and cavity filling involved. Could they do it? Yes. But it is a riskier process and also a costlier one.
2) PRS will not supply a 513/509 coil or bridge pickup....I would have to procure that myself...and they are rarely ever for sale.

In the end, I decided a "traditional" humbucker would make the most sense. I had an 85/15 already on hand, which I know I like, so it seemed like a safe bet. Plus, if I want something a little different, pickup swaps are now easy!

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Recently a 305 popped up at ebay. Seing that guitar, pretending to be Paul and being engaged by or engaging Mr. Mayer for a colaboration, I would have tried to convince him to take the 305. Perhaps flipping the headstock to make it to a JM signature.
But the reality was different and a Strat was copied to a greater extent.

Anyways: Though @VHTStark will give his 305 a look like a Fiore already offers, I'm curious about the result.

I wonder if Paul actually ever tried to do that with the 305 and John Mayer? I suppose the point is moot, as the JM has done very well for the company.

I do like the JM, but it certainly feels much more strat like; the 305 feels 100% PRS!
