About 10 years ago my friend's work was getting rid of some soldering stations, and dangit I can't remember the brand of it, but he grabbed me one and I've been using it ever since. I had a standard inexpensive soldering pencil from Radio Shack or something at the time, and this was a HUGE upgrade. I couldn't believe how much easier it was to solder. I would expect the one from Stew Mac to be just as good. But seriously, if you swap pickups or work on guitar electronics with any sort of regularity, these are a good investment.

Absolutely true John. Where I work many of us solder for a living. The right equipment makes all the difference. I absolutely hate to solder at home because it's impossible to get similar results. We have Metcal solder stations that are hot 5 seconds after turning them on.
They're not cheap but you may be able to find one on eBay or something.

It really depends on how much soldering you do and how valuable doing it fast and right is to you.

I should probably buy that kit.
All I have at home now is a soldering gun made by Weller, not the pen types like here.
The closest thing I had to the pen type was a wood burning kit I had as a kid many eons ago.

Wow, those Metcal ones are nice, but pricy.

We used Weller stations that had a hot air line as well when I worked at Lockheed. 10 second heat up, up to 650W, they rocked.

Unfortunately they cost about $1200 a pop, but they really performed... And it was nice to be able to solder anything from boards to wires up to 4g without having to break out the soldering gun

Bouncing a thread from a little over a year ago.
Placed an order this morning for:

Solomon SL-30 Soldering Station, Domestic, 110-volt

Solomon SL-30 Soldering Station, 1/8" chisel tip for SL-30

Kester Pocket-Pak Solder

Kester Pocket-Pak Lead-free Solder

They were out of the Pro Station, but the solder pen and station are the same as the Pro, just less accessories.
This will be useful for other stuff too besides guitars if I ever get into changing pickups on some of my older ones.
It will also go great with my new guitar tech station I just got yesterweek.

Actually been meaning to get a good soldering kit for years for wiring jobs on my FJ Cruiser too.

I have that iron(an alternate name) that I got off amazon for quite a bit cheaper and I love it. It was my first adjustable temp iron and it's great. The Kester pak is handy as well.

Doh!
I just bought some other stuff off of Amazon this morning, totally forgot to see what they had.
Huge Amazon shopper here, just slipped my mind.
Will have too see what they offer too.
