I'm not the biggest fan of red, but the burst on that ME V is just bada$$. I'd never had thought I'd like the birds to the side like that, but it's a great touch that really works with that color scheme and gorgeous fretboard!

Was wondering about that too as that would be unusual for a maple cap, maybe a reflection but what are the odds it'd be the same shape/location as a belly cut...
In the best case scenario it's a very shallow belly cut (it seems to be a normal thickness cap judging from the left side of the picture).
