Private Stock Friday

Such awesome pictures! I keep hoping I'll see mine one of these Fridays. They were supposed to cut the wood last month, so I don't know what that means in the timeline, but I love looking for it and seeing all the other guitars too.

Hey, I'll be back a little later today with PSF! Paul and I are about to jump on Reddit again for a Q&A session. If you want to follow along at noon, click here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guitar/comments/3aeszd/ama_paul_reed_smith_here_to_answer_your_questions/

Otherwise, we'll see you later with some cool guitar photos : )

Thanks Hunter, that was an extremely interesting read. (First time I've ever been on Reddit) There's mention of a previous Q&A session Paul did, do you have a link to that as well?

I really shouldn't be browsing porn while at work.

Oh my...oh, and that one with the Northern Lights...and the blue-green one, what color is that...so...much...hawtness...

What kind of birds are those?

Looks like mammoth ivory - my all time favorite PRS birds, that I heard you can no longer order...

That is what I was told last time I tried to order them. I was told that PRS doesn't want to put them on guitars because it is difficult to distinguish from illegally harvested ivory.

That is a bit strange to me. One of my hobbies is scrimshaw and I work with normal (legal) ivory as well as mammoth ivory and some other materials. Mammoth ivory is generally 10,000 years old or thereabouts, so harvesting it is basically digging it up out of the ground. Illegally harvested ivory would be that from poached animals and should be easily distinguishable from mammoth or fossil ivory. Also, some mammoth ivory is mineral-stained from its long immersion in the soil and can occur in different colors. You can even order some from companies like Boone Trading Company in Washington state. It's all perfectly legal. I have some myself set aside for a future project.

Puzzling....

I have these mammoth ivory inlays on my McCarty Singlecut. I bought the guitar for other reasons (it sounds amazing!), but I really don't see the big deal about mammoth ivory as an inlay material. If I was told it was Corian stained with tea, I'd have believed it.

In any case, obviously some bureaucrat somewhere made having these inlays not worth the headache for PRS. Legal or not, if production and deliveries are held up because of an inlay, it probably was a good idea to stop using the material. Granted, that's just a guess as to what must have happened.
