Call me a dinosaur but electric backup power sources won't cut it when it's 40 below. Might work for a while if they're indoors I suppose. My Honda gas gen will always start (it's engineered for the cold) and will run my Intelifire circuitry on the gas stove; I have a plug-in wired in for that purpose. I have a wood burner that will heat the house and I can cook on that if needs be. The gas heater in the basement will radiate enough without the fan to keep the basement warm. Solar and battery power doesn't keep the house warm and partially operational for winter in these parts at all. I went through that scenario this past winter and it wasn't nice. We would have been hooped without my backups in place.
