Pinging sound when tuning!

I picked up a used Mccarty 594 for a good price, but when I tune it, it makes a ping from some of the strings. Is there a problem with the nut? Do I need to widen the string slots and lube them with graphite/chapstick? Replace the nut with a better one? It’s a 17 Mccarty 594 with 10’s in standard tuning. It plays great but it’s not always in tune and takes some adjustments to get it dead on.

Off the top of my head, I'd say it's the strings binding either at the saddle/bridge, or the nut. Depending on how loud the pinging is, if louder, it's the saddles, if quieter, the nut. Reason is, proximity to the pickups.

First I would replace the strings, least point of access and it is possible the set was bad. Then check the saddles in the bridge. Most likely that is where it is coming from
