Pickup swap for DGT

Hi everyone

Currently own a DGT, and looking to buy a 2nd DGT to swap the pickups.

I love the guitar in every way, except for not being able to get single-coil type sounds on the neck pickup.

Don’t get me wrong, I do like the sound of the neck humbucker, specially when clean. But when I try to play other stuff (SRV, Hendrix), I have to reach for another guitar.

I tried the split coil sounds, but it didn’t do it for me.

I was thinking of swapping the DGT pickups for a Lollar Novel T set or Fralin Twangmaster

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Much appreciated

Cheers

P90s are fatter sounding than regular (strat/tele) single coils. If you're looking for a PAF-sized pickup that sounds like a single coil, check these out:

Fralin Twangmaster
Fralin Big Single
Lollar El Rayo
DiMarzio EJ Custom
DiMarzio Humbucker from Hell

I have a HFH in my old Charvel, it sounds nothing like a PAF and sounds very much like a single coil. In a "thick sounding" guitar like the DGT (I have one), it might be just the ticket.

I haven't tried the other ones on the list.

Perhaps A Private Stock DGT With A Single Coil Neck Pickup Instead Of A Humbucker? ;)

The DGT pickups really belong on that guitar. Personally I’d never swap ‘em. If you can’t get from a DGT what you want, then sell it and move on.

Hi Mike, isn’t that been the lifelong goal of guitar/ pickup manufacturers obviously talking humbuckers here. My short probably unpopular answer would be switch guitars. While some pickup/guitar combos do the split quite well in reality they don’t compare to a Silver Sky or that kind of platform. Always a compromise but good idea to post your question here so you (and I) can get others feedback especially those that have gone down that path. After years of swapping pickups and guitar platforms I finally figured out at least for me that a split bridge pickup is the least choice of the sounds I’d ever need or use. Now my basic go to is two hums and splitting the neck only. And believe me I have a 24-08 and the OG 78 Ibanez Artist with Tri-Sound pickups. While these guitars offfer a million tricks, most of those pony’s stay in the barn lol. Good luck on your quest btw. Cheer's Ken

He's buying a second one to get additional tones. He loves the guitar that much!

I've been there myself. Loved everything or adding another but looking for a different sound for my playing style and that guitar. The only person DGT pickups belong to in a DGT is for DG himself. The rest are for us to make our own..

There's so much more to a guitar than pickups. My decision is more than half way there before I even plug one in on demo days.

Thanks for info, I’ll check those out.

For sure, but then I’d be out of a kidney or something. 🤕

Thanks everyone else who chimed in.

I Hear Ya...I Was Just Being Silly. Although I Think It Would Be A Cool Guitar, I Doubt PRS Would Even Build It. On The Kidney Thing, They Are Overrated...That I Why You Have Two Of Them...One Is For Guitar Bartering Purposes In A State Of GAS. ;) (Again, Kidding...Don't Do It..Two Kidneys Is A Good Thing.) :)

just an FYI Jimmy Herring ( Widespredad Panic etc) Swaps his out for Lollar Imperials. I have those in my Teye and I can tell you the split is VERY tele/strat territory
