Hello all,
I will shortly be receiving my first SE Custom 24. Had several PRSi before (used to be all I played until I was sidelined by an injury a couple of years ago. Had to sell my collection in the aftermath.:bawling
most of them purchased used. I know that I am not fond of the stock SE VB/HFS pickups and three-way +coil tap switching, and I am open to suggestions. I have been musing on dropping in a DiMarzio DP160 Norton in the neck position with a DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 in the bridge. I had this combination in a les paul before, and LOVED it. Excessive, loud, aggressive, mean and way way way too much power. These will probably be mounted to Seymour Duncan Triple Shot Pickup rings, with the standard three-way blade, and a push/pull volume for series/parallel wiring and a push/pull tone for out-of-phase. (Best of both five-way selectors, and quite a few in-between, lots of complication is the tradeoff.)
Any suggestions to the contrary? I will add that I am looking for a BIG mid-range, deep 'smack-you-in-the chest' bass and dark, smooth, controllable treble. Not fond of Seymour Duncan pickups. Don't want shrill. Leaving the trem the way it is (for now, will probably upgrade to a machined brass killer claw and new machined brass sustain block in the future. Gonna get a bone nut on, and replace the tuners with lockers.)
Thanks in advance.
