My son has a ten year old Custom 22. He's age 29 now and playin more metal and heavy rock and while hot, the stock HFS/vintage just aren't hot enough. Suggestions please on what to swap out with? Not stuck on PRS pickups so considering others like Seymor Duncan, etc. Suggestions appreciated?

Hmm... I wonder if he is looking for something active, then. I don't have experience in that realm. Just my $0.02 from limited experience. I'm really liking the Dragon 1 PRS pickups, if you can find them pre-owned. Outside of PRS, I'm really liking the SD Alpha/Omega set.

Cool. Thank you.

HFS not hot enough? Holy smokes. He may want to look at actives.

Duncan makes a lot of hot passive stuff like the JB, Black Winter, Distortion.

Seems like a lot of metal players like Bare Knuckle Pickups, like the Nailbomb and Aftermath.

SHOOT. Why didn't I remember those?? Absolutely. Would try those first. I even HAVE a set in a guitar. That's what I get for only playing one of my guitars for months now.....!

Still on the honeymoon, I see!

Will check em out. Thank you.

Second on the \m/ for a PRS pickup, and the Alpha/Omega for non-PRS. Both are great pickups.

Have a go at the Lace humbuckers. They make quite a variety these days, and a lot are hight output. Bonus is they are generally very clear and articulate like active pickups but don't need batteries.

I'm tossing up whether to replace my own PRS pickups with a set of Lace hemis I have lying around. These things are on the lower output side, but they are really really articulate and will do pristine cleans just as well as high gain riffing.

Are you looking for active or passive pickups? You can try EMG 81 and 85 humbuckers that was on torero model.

At this point exploring all options. I will admit from PRS standpoint those HFS/Vintage pickups on the original guitar smoke pretty well but I guess he wants more. I have 85/15's on my other guitar and while I love them due to playing classic rock, blues I'll play my old custom 24 with the HFS if we play metal. Thanks to you all for your input.

Will take a look/listen. Checkin em all out. Part of the fun. Trying to get tone right can be a daunting task but I enjoy the diversion from the workaday world. Love the hobby. Thanks again.

Agree with Garrett about HFS - They are very hot pickups. Most folks who look to trade them out are looking for a more rounded (mellower?) sound. I would check things like amp and pedal settings to see if you can get the desired tone you are looking for.

Ok, cool. I've got 85/15's on my Custom 22 and love the tone. Warmer, great for classic rock and blues. HFS some serious metal if you want it. I'll pass along the info and appreciate the input. Thanks.

What amp is he using?

My HFS through the right AxeFX presets is just as wicked as \m/ or EMG X-Series.
Plenty hot into the Mark V too.

He just got the brand new Fractal FX III so a bit tight on money so gonna stick with the HFS which in my opinion will be perfect with that Fractal.
Thanks to all for your suggestions. Really appreciate it.
